Cut the social safety net instead of taxing the rich? What a shanda!

Our Jewish tradition instructs us to actively seek justice. On November's ballot Prop 30 is the initiative that will have the greatest impact in our work to repair the world. Prop 30 is a tax measure that is aimed at generating revenue to fund California's social safety net. 90% of the revenue will come from the top 1%.

Prop 30 is about:

- Saving K-12 and Community Colleges

- Protecting Medi-Cal

- Safer Staffing Ratios for First Responders

- Funding for Homecare Services

- Defending UC Students from Tuition Hikes

- Reinvesting in our Infrastructure

Learn Yiddish Dance with Bruce Biermen

Join the circle with renowned Yiddish dance master, BruceBierman, and discover the nearly forgotten folk dance that is currently making a miraculous comeback. Learn the steps, stylings and expressive hand gestures to the Freylekh, Joc, Chossidle, Bulgar, Sher, and Patsh Tanz. The last class, December 6th, will be a special Chanukah Freylekh with latkes, vodka and klezmer dance.

*All levels welcome. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Instructor Bruce Bierman is one of the leading specialists in Klezmer dance in California and has studied with several Yiddish dance masters in New York, Poland and Israel. Bruce has been a leading presenter of participatory Yiddish dance for major festivals, performances and conferences across the U.S. including the Berkeley Jewish Music Festival, KlezCalifornia, and the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony. He has also led dance to some of the top klezmer bands in the country including the grammy award-winning Klezmatics and Veretski Pass. Bruce serves as the artistic director of Stagebridge Los Angeles - the nation's first theater company and training program for older adults

SOCIALISM AT THE MOVIES A Film Series and Forum Fall 2012

DSA-LA invites you to view films of importance to progressives.

A showing and in-depth discussion.

The first film in this distinguished series will be on Friday, October 5th. The showings start at 8 PM.  Check-in time is 7:45. All events will be at a private home in Westwood.

Michael Harrington and Today's Other America. This documentary captures the ideas and persona of Michael Harrington through archival footage of the man in action. It includes interviews with his allies and his opponents-like John Kenneth Galbraith, Gloria Steinem, and William F. Buckley, and also with hard-pressed people struggling to survive in desperate circumstances. The film showing commemorates the 50th anniversary of the publication of Harrington's epic book, The Other America, which thrust poverty onto the national agenda and spearheaded President Johnson's War on Poverty.

Discussant: Our discussant to kick off the discussion will be Dr. Leonard Schneiderman, former Dean of the UCLA School of Social Welfare. Dean Schneiderman was a fighter for the rights of the poor even before Harrington wrote his book and has continued that battle as an activist and scholar to this day. He currently serves on the Los Angeles County Commission for Public Social Services, where he has grappled with the plight of the poorest of the poor, including the homeless. He'll share some of his recent work and offer a 2012 perspective on the status of that, "Other America".
