VOICES FROM THE SILENCE:
CELEBRATING YIDDISH CREATIVITY IN THE (FORMER) SOVIET UNION
AUGUST 12, 5 pm
An overflow crowd of more than 100 seated and standing attendees joined at the SoCal Arbeter Ring/Workmen's Circle on Sunday, Aug. 12, in paying tribute to the creativity of Yiddish culture in the former Soviet Union. The event marked the 60th anniversary of the Moscow execution of 13 leading Jewish cultural and civic leaders. The program featured the rare screening of "Jewish Luck," the 1924 silent-era film based on Sholom Aleichem's "Menakhem Mendl" that starred the legendary director of the Moscow State Jewish Theater, Shloyme Mikhoyls (Solomon Mikhoels), who was later a victim of Stalin's brutal murder campaign. Mikhoyls' voice, recorded in L.A. in 1943, was also heard by the enthusiastic audience. Kenneth Turan, renowned film critic for NPR and the Los Angeles Times, as well as a Yiddish activist, introduced the film in the contexts of early Jewish films and silent-era film-making. The annual tribute was co-sponsored by Yiddishkayt, California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language, The Sholem Community, and Ameinu. |
