Location: 100 E Main St, Ventura, CA 93001
This heart warming story of one unique woman's struggle portrays the fight of both an old art form to stay relevant and an old actress to find meaning and a stage in a society that worships youth. Shot in real time in one of the coldest winters in NY, Zypora's theater has one week to raise funding to keep their show going. Many miracles occur during this week. But will they be enough to save this critically acclaimed Yiddish show?

Picket line: "Hyatt, we're breaking up with you!"
|
Members of OUT and Occupy Picketing Hyatt Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood
THIS Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012
8401 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA
5 PM to 7 PM
Member, Jerry Gerash, writes, "We have been invited by the Hyatt hotel workers and their union, Unite Here local 10, to cosponsor this picket line action with them. We support their demand for decent pay and safe working conditions --- as well as protesting Hyatt's refusal to negotiate a contract with them for more than two years.
Hyatt advertises itself to the LGBT community as a "gay friendly hotel." I do not think Hyatt is friendly to me or to my community if Hyatt treats its workers --- many of whom are Latino/a and LGBT --- with harsh and exploitive working conditions, and imposing low salaries that are less than a living wage. This is an opportunity to join hands with those who are reaching out for ours, in these times of support for economic justice."

By David Ives, the playwright who has a current hit on Broadway!
Directed by: Elina de Santos
Produced by: Howard Teichman
Join the West Coast Jewish Theatre as we open the temple doors and experience the excommunication of the 17th Century Jew, Baruch de Spinoza. What is his crime? Thinking beyond the boundaries that the secular state has placed on Jewish thought. His dilemma has political echoes and consequences that reverberate deeply to this day.
"This thoughtful work paints the conflict between Spinoza's radical ideas and the oppressive religious doctrines of his times in an entertaining, highly accessible way. An engrossing historical drama."

| Autobiography and Memior with Writer Terry Wolverton |
The National Writers Union LA Chapter (open to all)
Sunday, Feb. 26, promptly at 1 pm
The theme is: "Autobiography and Memoir." Writer Terry Wolverton is our guest speaker. Her talk will explore: 1) the difference between memoir and autobiography; 2) reasons for writing a memoir (and which of those intersect with readership interest); 3) pitfalls and strategies for success with memoir writing; and 4) the controversy around "truth" in writing about one's life. She will also leave some time for Q&A. Terry has another commitment that day and needs to leave shortly after 2 pm so we will begin ON TIME. Please arrive early and don't miss anything!
Terry Wolverton is the author of nine books, including Insurgent Muse: Life and Art at The Woman's Building, a memoir. She's also edited 14 literary anthologies. She teaches creative nonfiction in the MFA Writing Program at Antioch University LA. She's the founder of Writers At Work, a creative writing center in LA, where she teaches workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
After Terry's talk, we'll proceed to some short (5-minute) presentations by NWU members in this genre. We'll limit the sign-ups to ten people, so contact the chapter chair to get on the list. Members of NWU get preference, then we'll open up the list to AR members and guests.
Admission for Arbeter Ring members is $10 (refunded if you join the union that day). Refreshments will be served.

It pervades this volume, which he acknowledges is messy; he writes: 'You really can't define Yiddishkeit neatly in words or pictures. You sort of have to feel it by wading into it.' The book does this with gusto." -New York Times "Yiddishkeit is as colorful, bawdy, and charming as the culture it seeks to represent." -Print magazine "every bit of it brimming with the charm and flavor of its subject and seamlessly meshing with the text to create a genuinely compelling, scholarly comics experience" -Publishers Weekly "Yiddishkeit is a book that truly informs about Jewish culture and, in the process, challenges readers to pick apart their own vocabulary." -Chicago Tribune "a postvernacular tour de force" -The Forward
