We Mourn the Loss of Adrienne Cooper
|
The Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring mourns the passing of Adrienne Cooper -- a dear friend and colleague, a passionate social justice activist, and an inspirational performer. Adrienne's voice, extensive knowledge, high energy, humor, and sharp insights will be sorely missed.
Adrienne played a large role in the revival of Klezmer music as a popular art form. She was widely recognized as one of the world's leading vocalists of Yiddish song. The New York Times called her voice "splendid." Her true love of Yiddishkayt shone through in every concert.
For over a decade Adrienne shaped and led the Workmen's Circle program agenda. As Director of External Affairs she was among the first modern Jewish community professionals to implement a collaborative programming model that yielded timely partnerships with both emerging and established artists.
Adrienne's legacy and the pathways she developed will continue to inspire people of all ages to discover the power of their cultural Jewish identity and progressive values.

New Film about the Russian Jewish Experience
|
For many Russian Jews, the Russian Revolution promised the chance of carving a new cultural identity, a hope for escaping the constraints placed on the Jewish people by the Russian empire. My grandfather fought for that hope in Ukraine, and suffered for it. Despite his efforts, my birth certificate still declares my nationality not as "Ukrainian," not as "Russian" or "USSR / Soviet" but as "Jewish." Cycles and Revolutions is a documentary that uses my family's experiences and interviews with experts to create a clear picture of the lives and ideals of Jews in the Russian and Soviet Empires, and then uses that picture to help define our identity, and secure our future in the world today. Oy vey! Yiddish making a comeback at colleges
When YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City began offering summer programs in Yiddish in 1968, they were the only such program in the world. Now, they compete with summer intensive Yiddish programs in Tel Aviv, Israel; Ottawa, Canada; Indiana and Arizona, said YIVO's dean, Paul Glasser. About 20 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada now offer some Yiddish courses, though just a few of them have degrees in the language.
