FROM OUR NEW DIRECTOR . . .
| Hello. It is a great pleasure to write to you as the new director of the Southern California Arbeter Ring. The Arbeter Ring has an inspiring history of fighting for social justice and serving as a hub for secular Jewish culture. My deepest commitment is to continue the Arbeter Ring's legacy as a force for Jewish culture and social justice, while also engaging new members, and creating vibrant new programming and opportunities for political engagement. I look forward to continuing these pursuits, and to add to the Arbeter Ring's reputation as an organization working actively in the community. A few words about where I come from: I hold a Master's in Education from UCLA, and am currently in my third year of teaching the Hey class (middle school students) at the Sholem Educational Community. I have been involved with the progressive Jewish community in Los Angeles for five years, including as a board member of JQ International, through which I have organized many cultural events for LGBT Jews in Los Angeles, I also actively participate in many political issues from universal health care to budget cuts to immigration reform, and look forward to joining many of you in the pursuit of social justice. I am always open to new ideas and feedback, so please let me know your thoughts on AR/WC and what I can do to improve the organization. I look forward to meeting many of you in person at an upcoming event, or via email. Best, Kalil Cohen

AR(WC) & Parlor Performances Present: ROBIN HIRSCH
Fri., Sept. 16 @ 8pm here at our Center $10 members / $15 non-members An evening of short stories & monologues from MOSAIC: Fragments of A Jewish Life and THE WHOLE WORLD PASSES THROUGH: Stories from the Cornelia Street Cafe. (Hirsch is a founder of the Cornelia Street Cafe in Greenwhich Village -- deemed a culinary and cultural landmark by the City of New York!)
Robin Hirsch was born in London during the Blitz to German Jews who had fled Hitler. Robin's father had served in the Kaiser's army during the First World War, winning the Iron Cross Second Class, the same medal as a young corporal named Adolf Hitler. Now in England, twenty years later, after being interned as an enemy alien and eventually released, he sits for the remaining five years of the war on the roof of their block of flats (apartment house), looking and listening for the bombs of his erstwhile countrymen. His mother, a legendary Berlin beauty, owned an arts and crafts studio with two members of the German aristocracy who were instrumental in helping her to escape at the last moment.
This complex ambiguous history informs both his life and his art. Join us for a unique evening with our special guest, Robin Hirsch.
