Larry Bush is Coming, Oct 3 and 6 The Sholem Community and Arbeter Ring present
LAWRENCE BUSH
editor of the flagship progressive secular magazine Jewish Currents, leading two
provocative discussions: Waiting for God: Secular Jews &
Spirituality Sun, Oct 3 at 5 p at the home of Jan Goodman and Jerry
Manpearl 939
San Vicente Blvd / Santa Monica, CA 90402
What
do people mean when they say, "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual"? Why have so many
descendants of secular Jewish families become comfortable with religious
language? Does atheism have its own spirituality? Lawrence Bush addresses the
varieties of spiritual experience, and suggests a definition of spirituality
that can fit into a humanist worldview. The Ambivalent Jew: Progressive Politics
& Jewish Identity Weds, Oct 6 at 7 p Arbeter Ring (Workmen's
Circle) 1525 S. Robertson Blvd / Los
Angeles, CA 90035 Do you feel a tension between
affirming your Jewish identity and affirming your humanism? Does the Israeli
Occupation make you want to become a Unitarian? Lawrence Bush will lead a
discussion of the forces that both attract and repel progressive Jews from
Jewish life and Jewish affirmation.
Lawrence
Bush is "an atheist who has nevertheless worked
intimately in Jewish religious institutions" as a writer and editor for much of
his adult life. His work has appeared in Tikkun,
Mad Magazine, The New York Times, and The
Village Voice, and many other publications. His newest book is Waiting for God: The Spiritual Explorations of
a Reluctant Atheist (Ben Yehuda Press). Suggested donation: $10 per
session or purchase a subscription to Jewish Currents ($18) and attend
both! No one will be turned away for lack of ability to pay. For child care or more information, please contact Julie@Sholem.org or call 818-760--6625 Please plan to become a subscriber if you are not one already, or plan to give a gift sub to a friend or family member. This is an excellent time to invite friends and family for some truly stimulating discussion about secular progressive Jewish ideas and involvement.
