Planning for the Future... Third meeting Thurs Jul 15 at 7:30 p! Our Arbeter Ring faces a time of
transition and we call upon our members in good standing to help us plan the future of our organization. A lively group has attended our first two gatherings and we thank them for their commitment and interest.
These are some of the issues we'd like to explore with your input: -Who are we as a secular Jewish community and who do we want to become? (Core
values, cultural identity, political identity.) -What can the Arbeter Ring improve upon? What changes would you like to see? -How do we remain a vibrant, sustainable force in the 21st century? -How can we add value to your life?
Join in and be part of this dynamic process. We ask that you attend as many of these meetings as possible. Your membership in Workmen's Circle Arbeter Ring Branch 1016 or 1089 of our
National Organization must be current. Remaining dates are as follows. Please mark them in your calendar and come! --Thurs Jul 15 at 7:30 pm...use the Rear Entrance please! --Sat Jul 24 at 2 pm.
We'll
present our findings to all members at a SoCal Brunch Meeting on Sunday, August 29 at 11 am.
Remember, this is your Arbeter Ring. Now's the time to be a leader. Let's
explore our brave new future together. A sheynem un hartsikn dank! Thank you very much! |

1). A Two-State Solution: Is It Feasible?A conversation between Martin Sherman, 2009-10 visiting Israeli Schusterman scholar at USC/HUC-JIR and the academic director of the Jerusalem Summit, and David Pine, West Coast Regional Director of Americans for Peace Now, moderated by Rabbi David Wolpe. Thurs Jul 15 at 7:30 pm at Sinai Temple, 10400 Wilshire Bl, LA.Free of charge and open to the public. Please contact Ellen Pierson at epierson@sinaitemple.org or 310.481.3234 to register. RSVPs appreciated and mandatory to park inside the building! 2). Jerusalem Expert Danny Seidemann BreakfastDaniel (Danny) Seidemann is an Israeli attorney, founder and director of the
Israeli NGO "Terrestrial Jerusalem," and a senior advisor with The Kairos
Project. After litigating a variety of cases in Israeli courts and working more
than 20 years on the most sensitive issues related to the disposition of
Jerusalem, Danny has come to be regarded as the world's leading expert on
geopolitical Jerusalem. An amazing
repository of information, an articulate and compelling speaker, and a
longtime
advocate for Jerusalem as a livable city for all its residents, he is frequently cited in
top Israeli, Arab and international media. His analysis and on-the-ground
tours are relied upon by negotiators and the international community, including
the US Government. He frequently comes to Washington for private
meeting and briefings: Congressman Howard Berman has referred to
Danny as the "Jerusalem expert nonpareil." Arbeter Ring is a cosponsor of this breakfast. There will be a $10 charge for breakfast. Fri Jul 16 at 8:00 am, Factor's Deli Patio, 9420 W Pico Bl, LA.
3). Overcoming Hatred to Rebuild Hope: A Commemoration of Tisha B'Av A Temple Emanuel & Temple Isaiah program
with Daniel Sokatch of the New Israel Fund
The ancient rabbis tell us that the Second Temple was destroyed because of "sinat khinam," incivility and "baseless hatred." Those destructive forces continue to echo in Israel and the Jewish community today. How can we move beyond them to a future of hope? Following this discussion there will be a reading of the Book of Lamentations at 8:30. No charge.
Monday, July 19, 7:00 pm, Temple Emanuel of Beverly HillsBess P. Maltz Center, 8844 Burton Way, Beverly Hills

1) Donate to our SOVA food collection bin! Non-perishable foods only, please. The bin is just inside the door to our Library. Hunger is a real issue in L.A. Please share your blessings! We also collect wine corksfor recycling. Put them right in the SOVA bin and we'll separate them for you. 2) What's Going On at Robertson Car Wash? Many injustices take place in the carwash industry. Some workers receive no wages, but tips only. Owners sometimes fail to pay for hours worked and fail to provide adequate safety equipment. Needless to say, there are no benefits and no unions. Workers have been protesting Robertson Car Wash at 2460 SoRo asking the owners to sign the CLEAN Carwash Agreement, but so far they have not. Maybe AR can be of some help in this struggle, but in the meantime, please Boycott Robertson Car Wash!

Speak Yiddish! Why Not? | |
Every Monday at 2 p Hadasa is a hit! Thanks to your attendance, we're continuing her Conversational Yiddish group. We've gotten people's Yiddish speaking muscles flexing with world-recognized Yiddish teacher, scholar, translator and raconteuse Hadasa Cytrynowicz. Originally from Lodz, and later a long-time resident of Brazil, Hadasa brings a wealth of experience and stories, songs, proverbs and sayings, poetry and interesting topics for discussion to her group. Each session is an hour and 15 minutes.
During the summer hiatus of Yakob Basner's Monday evening classes, we especially encourage his students to keep their Yiddish kite flying by attending this group. Admission is by voluntary donation. All levels of Yiddish are welcome. Kumt arayn! Far vos nisht?

Soviet Yiddish Writers Program Sun Aug 15, 4 p Sing with us! | This year's Soviet Yiddish Writers program, conducted in memory of the Yiddish poets, writers and communal leaders liquidated by the Soviet regime on August 12, 1952, will take place at Arbeter Ring on Sun, Aug 15 at 4 p. This unique program focuses on poets Shike Driz and Itsik Fefer, and on musical settings of their work by L.A. composer Joseph Schrogin, whose family will be in attendance. Thanks to the generosity of donors to the Lilke and Szlama Majzner Memorial Fund
for Yiddish Culture, our choruses will premiere new choral arrangements of Schrogin's songs. Cosponsors include L.A. Yiddish Culture Club, Sholem Community, CIYCL and Ameinu.
If you are interested in performing with us for this historic occasion, please let us know. You do not have to know or read Yiddish, but you should be able to read music and hold your own in your voice part in a three- or four-part choral arrangement. There are only a few rehearsals between now and the concert, so it is a limited commitment (please plan on attending all of them, though). Rehearsals are Mon nights from 7:30-9:30 p: Jul 26, Aug 9, then the performance on Aug 15.
