Planning for the Future... Second meeting Sun June 27 at 10:30 am! Our Arbeter Ring faces a time of
transition and we call upon our members in good standing to help us plan the future of our organization.
These are some of the issues we'd like to explore with your input:
-Who are we as a secular Jewish community and who do we want to become? (Core
values, cultural identity, political identity.) -What can the Arbeter Ring improve upon? What changes would you like to see
happen? -How do we remain a vibrant, sustainable force in the 21st century? -How can we add value to your life?
Join in and be part of this dynamic process. We ask that you attend as many of the four
meetings we have scheduled as possible. Your membership in Workmen's Circle Arbeter Ring Branch 1016 or 1089 of our
National Organization must be current. Remaining dates are as follows. Please mark them in your calendar and come! --Sun Jun 27 at 10:30 am --Thurs Jul 15 at 7:30 pm --Sat Jul 24 at 2 pm.
We'll
present our findings to all members at a SoCal Brunch Meeting on Sunday, August 29 at 11 am.
Remember, this is your Arbeter Ring. Now's the time to be a leader. Let's
explore our brave new future together. A sheynem un hartsikn dank! Thank you very much! |

| Report from Israel and Palestine, next Weds Jun 30 at 7:30 p |
AR member Lenny Potash (also member of Sholem Community and Jewish Labor Committee and longtime labor activist) and Ben Potash have just returned from a study tour and visit to Israel and Palestine in conjunction with ICAHD - Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions. They were mostly in Jerusalem and the West Bank, meeting with human rights groups, and individuals and families who've been impacted by Israeli policies. They'll lead a discussion on how progressive Palestinians and Israelis view the facts
on the ground in light of their desire for a just and sustainable peace, and will show visuals of the stories and the historical context of Israel/Palestine. There will be ample time for questions and discussion. No admission fee (voluntary donations accepted).

1) Donate to our SOVA food collection bin! Non-perishable foods only, please. The bin is just inside the door to our Library. Hunger is a real issue in L.A. Please share your blessings! We also collect wine corksfor recycling. Put them right in the SOVA bin and we'll separate them for you. 2) UTLA is sponsoring a summer blood drive with the
Red Cross on Tues Jun 29 from
10-4, at 3303 Wilshire Blvd, LA 90010. Please make an appointment to donate
blood and encourage your friends and co-workers to join you in saving
lives. Please log onto
www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code UTLA, or contact Lucy Rothstein at 213-368-6262. Free parking for all
donors. Walk-ins are welcome, but having an appointment
gives the Red Cross a better idea of how much staff and supplies to
provide. Have a good meal before you donate, and
bring a photo ID. There will be plenty of snacks available
after your donation. Donors also will be eligible to enter in a Free
Gas Drawing to receive a $500 gift card for gas.
The blood you
donate will keep operating rooms open and surgeries from being
cancelled and save many lives. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Sincerely, AR member and UTLA Area Rep Steven Klein 3) What's Going On at Robertson Car Wash? Many injustices take place in the carwash industry. Some workers receive no wages, but tops only. Owners sometimes fail to pay for hours worked and fail to provide adequate safety equipment. Needless to say, there are no benefits and no unions. Workers have been protesting Robertson Car Wash at 2460 SoRo asking the owners to sign the CLEAN Carwash Agreement, but so far they have not. Maybe AR can be of some help in this struggle, but in the meantime, please Boycott Robertson Car Wash! |
Avek in der eybikayt We mourn with our longtime member Lynn Finkle on the loss of her cousins Jules & Shirley Draznin.

Bring entrees, desserts, drinks, wine, breads, etc., and we'll throw together a few of Earl's songs for your listening pleasure. A planning committee has begun meeting here to organize a larger Los Angeles celebration this Fall of the life and work of this composer ("Ballad for Americans," "Joe Hill," "The House I Live In," etc.) If this is a project you'd like to help out with in any capacity, please let us know. Call us at 310.552.2007. And come on July 2nd!

Speak Yiddish! Why Not? | |
Mondays at 2 p: June 28, July 5, and ongoing Our first three sessions have been a great success...we've gotten people's Yiddish speaking muscles flexing in our new Conversational Yiddish program with world-recognized Yiddish teacher, scholar, translator and raconteuse Hadasa Cytrynowicz. Originally from Lodz, and later a long-time resident of Brazil, Hadasa brings a wealth of experience and stories, song, proverbs and sayings, poetry and interesting topics for discussion to her group. Each session is an hour and 15 minutes.
Our attendance so far has been very encouraging, so we plan to continue every Monday at 2 p. Admission is by voluntary donation. All levels of Yiddish are welcome. Kumt arayn! Let's see you at Arbeter Ring in June! Far vos nisht?

Soviet Yiddish Writers Program Sun Aug 15, 4 p Sing with us! | This year's Soviet Yiddish Writers program, conducted in memory of the Yiddish poets, writers and communal leaders liquidated by the Soviet regime on August 12, 1952, will take place at Arbeter Ring on Sun, Aug 15 at 4 pm. This year will be a fresh and unique program, focusing on poets Shike Driz and Itsik Fefer, and particularly on musical settings of their work by local L.A. composer Joseph Schrogin. Thanks to the generosity of donors to the Lilke and Szlama Majzner Memorial Fund
for Yiddish Culture, our Arbeter Ring choruses will premiere new choral arrangements of Schrogin's songs.
If you are interested in performing with us for this historic occasion, please let us know. You do not have to know or read Yiddish, nor read music necessarily, but you should be able to hold your own in your voice part in a three- or four-part choral arrangement. There are only a few rehearsals between now and the concert, so it is a limited commitment, and you are invited to give Yiddish singing a try. Who knows, you might like it! Rehearsals are Monday nights from 7:30-9:30 p: Jun 28, Jul 12, Jul 26, Aug 9, then the performance on Aug 15.
