In A More Beautiful World Gallery
House of Pleasures: Paintings by Eliza M. Schmid
Only three more days--through May 28!
House of Pleasures

Eliza Schmid, a classically trained psychoanalyst, spins stories in her paintings that are whimsical, tragicomical and grotesque, often about abnormal, surrealist mental conditions that are yet tellingly emblematic of our so-called "normal" times. Her previous show several years ago was one of the most popular ever in our gallery. Don't miss this show of new work, which brings in fresh elements of witchcraft and travel. Call before coming just to be sure we're here!

Lilke Majzner Unveiling
The family of our beloved member Lilke Majzner informs us that the unveiling of her grave marker will be held at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park on Sunday, June 13 at 11 am. Any who are interested may attend. Arbeter Ring Southern California has established the Lilke and Szlama Majzner Memorial Fund for Yiddish Culture, which so far has partially funded the Warsaw Ghetto Commemoration held last month, and also new musical arrangements of classic Yiddish songs for our chorus. Additional donations to this fund (payable to "Workmen's Circle") are invited.
Social Action
1) Donate to our SOVA food collection bin! Non-perishable foods only, please. The bin is just inside the door to our Library. Hunger is a real issue in L.A. Please share your blessings!

2) Arbeter Ring will also collect wine corksfor recycling into flooring, bulletin boards, etc. You can put them right into our SOVA bin and we'll separate them for you.

3) Arbeter Ring is cooperating with the South Robertson Neighborhoods Council Green Team, together with local school clubs, scout troops and other groups, in picking neighborhood fruit and avocado trees. We are looking for:
FRUIT TREES WITH FRUIT READY TO BE PICKED
& VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH HARVESTING

For appointments to have your fruit tree picked, or to volunteer for one of our crews (it's really fun!), call or email Paula Waxman at (310) 559-2552, pwmw100@yahoo.com.

People in Los Angeles are hungry!  The SoRo Green Team drops off all fruit collected to our local food bank:
SOVA FOOD BANK, 8846 W Pico Bl. In Feb, we picked over 700 pounds of fruit in 2 days!

We had such a rich discussion about the first three stories in Joseph Epstein's Fabulous Small Jews that we decided to continue the conversation with the remainder of the stories in this collection. Epstein is an evocative, enigmatic storyteller whose portraits of people and families in emotional trouble are sure to stimulate powerful memories and feelings.

No RSVP required. Just bring an entree or drinks or dessert to serve about 8 people.
Mifgash, a Jewish Weekend for Learning
Arbeter Ring Life Members Rabbi Haim Dov and Lynn Beliak
will once again host a Los Angeles
Mifgash weekend, June 3-6. It starts at 6 pm on Thursday with dinner and fellowship, followed by the film Defamation. Mifgash has always had a stimulating mix of Jewish study, good food, and serious discussion focusing on Jews, Judaism, and general ethical and moral concerns.

The total cost of the weekend is $125, including food, copying of materials, and a travel pool. Housing arrangements are possible. If you have special dietary needs please let us know. Please send a $50 deposit if you are planning to attend to Mifgash c/o Haim Dov Beliak, 9715 Lockford Street, Los Angeles, CA 90035.
For further info write to haimbeliak@gmail.com.

Plans include study of various classical Jewish texts with Gila Nissan. Harold Berlak will lead a discussion on morality in contemporary education. Robin Podolsky is planning a presentation on Levinas. Haim will lead a discussion entitled: "Diasporas in Renewal: Poland and Suriname?" A number of people have asked for dialogue about "BDS" (Boycotts, Divestment, and Sanctions). It's a most engaging and refreshing weekend with smart, committed people.

Earl Robinson Centennial 1910-2010
A planning committee has begun meeting at Arbeter Ring to organize a Los Angeles celebration this Fall of the life and work of composer Earl Robinson ("Ballad for Americans," "Joe Hill," "The House I Live In," etc. If this is a project you'd like to help out with in any capacity, please let us know. Call us at 310.552.2007. Thanks!
