In A More Beautiful World Gallery
House of Pleasures: Paintings by Eliza M. Schmid
Only one more week--through May 28!
House of Pleasures

Eliza Schmid, a classically trained psychoanalyst, spins stories in her paintings that are whimsical, tragicomical and grotesque, often about abnormal, surrealist mental conditions that are yet tellingly emblematic of our so-called "normal" times. Her previous show several years ago was one of the most popular ever in our gallery. Don't miss this show of new work, which brings in fresh elements of witchcraft and travel. Call before coming just to be sure we're here!

Your Life Story on DVD
Jeff Fromberg has made a generous offer to do video interviews with members and friends of our Arbeter Ring and to provide them with a free DVD copy of the interview. There is no charge for this; the purpose of the interview and the website Jeff runs is to conduct and possibly to put online oral history interviews with people who have led interesting lives and who are willing to talk about their experiences. Please call us at 310.552.2007 if you are interested.

We had such a rich discussion about the first three stories in Joseph Epstein's Fabulous Small Jews that we decided to continue the conversation with the remainder of the stories in this collection. Epstein is an evocative, enigmatic storyteller whose portraits of people and families in emotional trouble are sure to stimulate powerful memories and feelings.

No RSVP required. Just bring an entree or drinks or dessert to serve about 8 people.
Poetry Plus Hosts Barry Smolin
Thursday, May 20 at 7 pm
POETRY PLUS, hosted by Uncle Ruthie Buell
welcomes guest poet Barry Smolin

BARRY SMOLIN, teacher, broadcaster, songwriter, poet, joins us on May 20.  Many Southern Californians (especially you Grateful Dead fans) may already be listeners to his popular Sunday night radio program The Music Never Stops, heard on KPFK (90.7 FM) Sundays from 8-10 p. The Los Angeles Times has already spotlighted Barry for his creative projects in the English Department at Hamilton High School. As for his poetry and songs, that will be a brand new experience for all of us "Poetry Plussers." And, as a special treat, Barry will bring with him a few of his talented poets from Hamilton High.

Everybody welcome! Feel free to bring a friend--we love and need new people! No reservations required, just come.

.....On a sadder and different note, Poetry Plus has lost a very loyal and talented member, Paula Newhorn (Hirschhorn), a wonderful poet and author. By way of celebrating her life, perhaps all those who knew her (and even those who didn't) might bring in a few lines, original or by a favorite poet, dealing with death, loss, memories.

Earl Robinson Centennial 1910-2010
A planning committee has begun meeting at Arbeter Ring to organize a Los Angeles celebration of the life and work of composer Earl Robinson ("Ballad for Americans," "Joe Hill," "The House I Live In," etc. If this is a project you'd like to help out with in any capacity, please let us know. Call us at 310.552.2007. Thanks!
