Findings on Gulf Oil Spill the Focus of January Campus Event
William K. Reilly, co-chair of President Obama's Oil Spill Commission, will speak on the Duke campus Jan. 24. Reilly, who is also chair of the Nicholas Institute Board of Advisors, will discuss the findings of the commission's formal report to the president, surrounding the spill, just days after its release. Duke Paper Adds Clarity to Employment Impact Predictions
With U.S. unemployment rates hovering near 10 percent, proposals for new energy and environmental policies are scrutinized more for their ability to create jobs. Yet, job-creation estimates vary widely, are often conflicting and can confuse policymaking efforts, according to a policy brief released by the Nicholas Institute. Read More

Report: South Could Pay Less for Electricity

The South could pay less for its electricity in 20 years than is currently projected if strong public policies are enacted to spur energy production and use, according to a report by researchers at Duke University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. The 190-page report builds on a policy brief released last summer and provides an in-depth assessment of the scope of renewable energy resources in the South and their economic impact on electricity rates and utility bills in the region. Journal Publishes Study on the Cost of Wind

Environmental Science & Technology published the report, "Cost of Wind Energy: Comparing Distant Wind Resources to Local Resources in the Midwestern United States," in a recent issue. The paper explores the trade-offs between developing new wind generation at local sites and installing wind farms at remote sites. Read More

Paper: Climate Change and Adaptation in Nepal

The impacts of climate change on water resources are likely to affect agricultural systems and food security, especially in Nepal, according to a working paper by Nicholas Institute and the International Water Management Institute. Read More
