Letter from the CP Cal President
by Kathleen O'Connor |
Dear Collaborative Professionals,
As we start our sixth official year as a statewide organization, I appreciate the opportunities I have had, through CP Cal, to make friends across the state who are wise, insightful and fun. Without the wisdom gained from each profession, it is unlikely that we would have accomplished as much as we have. As the current CP Cal Board President, I now look forward to a year of statewide Collaborative growth while all of us continue to appreciate the wealth of new friendships available to us.

Collaborative Community Comes Together at Celebration V | by David Fink
Scores of Collaborative professionals descended upon the Union Square area of San Francisco for our fifth annual statewide conference, this year entitled "Celebration V: Building Bridges - Collaborative Practice in Challenging Times." Having heard the constructive feedback from attendees of our four preceding Celebrations, the conference planners took special effort to create a program that was stimulating, interesting, entertaining and challenging, and yet accessible to practitioners of all levels.

Spotlight on New Board Members |
by Laura Dewey
Your CP Cal Board is interdisciplinary in nature, composed of financial professionals, mental health professionals, and attorneys. The Board meets monthly in a telephone "bridge," in addition to three face-to-face meetings per year, one of which is an all-day retreat, alternating between Northern and Southern California.
At Celebration V in San Francisco, CP Cal added two new Board members: David Kuroda and Stephanie Maloney.

The Eureka Awards at Celebration V |
by Leslee Newman
The Eureka Awards are presented annually at the CP Cal statewide conference, the "Celebration." The Award was established in 2006 at the first CP Cal Celebration in Sonoma. The Eureka Award recognizes and honors those who "have made significant contributions and demonstrated an abiding dedication to establishing and sustaining Collaborative Practice in California."
The Eureka Award is not limited to those in any particular practice, career, specialty, or area of the state. The recipients are nominated, but not announced until the annual ceremony at the CP Cal Celebration. The 2010 recipients include Suzan Barrie Aiken, Karen Heller Berdy, Judi Foley, Amy Rodney, and Dawn Strachan.

Public Education Moves to the Next Level: Berkeley Consulting Group |
by Arlene Kostant
Last summer, Northern California's Public Education Committee (NorCal PEC) was delighted to learn that the Berkeley Consulting Group had agreed to take us on as a client at a non-profit rate. Berkeley Consulting is a UC Berkeley student-run management consulting group. Their task was to design and develop a thorough marketing and public education plan for Collaborative Practice on a local, regional and ultimately statewide level. |

Public Education Committees (PECs) -- Spreading the Collaborative Word |
by Steve Rutlen
Over the past 24 months the NorCal and SoCal Public Education Committees (PECs) have undertaken two key initiatives to make the general public more aware of Collaborative Practice. The first initiative was an airport campaign which placed four different ads in the Southwest Airlines terminals in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Orange County and San Diego airports. The second initiative placed similar ads in key destination terminals of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. All ads directed viewers to the www.CPCal.com website. |

Learnings from UCLA and the Ever-Expanding Toolbox |
by Margaret Anderson
As my law practice has moved from litigation to exclusively consensual dispute resolution, I have learned to think differently about the possible breadth of services that we lawyers provide. My experience has been that historically lawyers have been thought of narrowly as "mouth pieces"-advocates who speak for and act for their clients, for the purpose of convincing the other party and the ultimate decision-maker of the rightness of their client's point of view. "Rightness" is defined almost exclusively by reference to the law. Unfortunately, the Counselor aspect of law practice hasn't been in the forefront for many lawyers and clients. |
