Monsanto - "The Darth Vader of Ag"
Someone asked me, "What are GMOs?" when I mentioned the moniker for Genetically Modified Organism or Genetically Engineered (GE) agriculture during a class. It was surprising to hear the innocent question.
Genetic modifications (GM) of plants "...uses laboratory techniques to insert artificial gene units to re-program the DNA blueprint of the plant with completely new properties... joining fragments of DNA, usually derived from multiple organisms, including viruses, bacteria, plants and animals. ...The GM transformation process of plants is crude, imprecise, and causes widespread mutations... unnaturally alter(ing) the genes' functioning in unpredictable and potentially harmful ways... includ(ing) poorer crop performance, toxic effects, allergic reactions, and damage to the environment. ...GM foods are not properly tested for human safety before they are released for sale. In fact, the only published study directly testing the safety of a GM food on humans found potential problems. To this date, this study has not been followed up. (GM CROPS-JUST THE SCIENCE research documenting the limitations, risks, and alternatives)
GMOs are brought to you by the same company, Monsanto, that developed Agent Orange for use during the Vietnam War (which by the way has been linked to Type II diabetes in veterans exposed to Agent Orange) and first tested in the forests of Kauai; these and other bio-terrorists have turned their attention on the food and bio-fuel industry, planting genetically modified corn crops throughout the islands, and soy throughout the world, all the while receiving U.S. government subsidies for bio-fuels, and finding a home during Governor Cayetono's administration at the U.H. Manoa campus, College of Tropical Agriculture.
Having met resistance from the European Nations, (i.e., GMO products used for food must be labeled-unlike in the U.S. where they don't have to be labeled), GMO corn, soy beans, have found its way into the food chain as feed for animals. (www.bangmfood.org/stealth-gmos, GM Animal Feed: The Hidden GM in Your Trolley)
"A Testbiotech survey released in August 2010 shows that DNA fragments from transgenic plants are increasingly found in animal tissue such as milk, inner organs and muscles,...entering the blood stream from the gut...(to) the udder and the milk. ...A few years ago, DNA from genetically engineered maize was found in samples from pigs." (And) more recently..in the organs of fish, namely rainbow trout and tilapia. In fish, the gene sequences were found in nearly all inner organs. (GM DNA is found in animal tissue)
"Because many GM crops contain antibiotic-resistant genes, there is a risk that superbugs will be created, i.e., bacteria that cannot be controlled by antibiotics... especially neomycin, which is used in animal feed." ( www.bangmfood.org/stealth-gmos Superbugs section.)
"It's an outrage that consumers are not properly informed that they may be eating milk, eggs and meat from GM-fed animals and genetically modified fruits and vegetables". We need to have GMO foods labeled. Demand legislation. Let your supermarkets know you do not want to buy GMO.
