Summertime is here, and the weather makes it easy to enjoy outdoor activities earlier each day. Whether or not you're in the hot blazing sun, make sure to hydrate before, during and after your workout (it is recommended to drink water every 20 minutes), and throughout the day.
The other day, I went home early from work to try to complete my recipe book; only to find that as I sat at my computer, my vision was very blurry. I had eaten a chocolate tart thinking that perhaps I was tired. When that didn't help, I laid down thinking that perhaps I needed to rest my eyes. I tried resting for three half hour periods, only to find that it didn't seem to be working. I did drink water and an hour plus later, I was all right.
I mentioned this to a friend of mine who has run marathons for 18 plus years, and she told me that it was probably due to dehydration. Since I've been running almost every day for the past two months, to jump start my fitness routine, I did a quick search on dehydration symptoms. The symptom(s) that caught my eye was having a swollen, dry tongue. I think I remember biting my tongue, and so it's been sore. I read that water leaks from the sore. Also, there's caffeine in chocolate, and it acts as a diuretic; meaning it causes more urination; and plays right into dehydration.

Think You're Drinking Enough Water? By Leroy R. Perry, Jr. Condensed from PARADE, for a formula on how much water an active or sedentary person needs by weight, per day. "If you're not drinking enough water, you could end up with excess body fat, poor muscle tone, digestive complications, muscle soreness-even water-retention problems... wastes are not removed effectively and may build up as kidney stones... It's possible to lose a pint...each day just exhaling... (and) a dry mouth is the last outward sign of extreme dehydration..." So, bottoms up!
