"Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine,"
said Hippocrates; the father of Modern Medicine.
Look how far modern medicine has strayed: A study by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (in conjunction with Abbot Laboratories) on 3,414 heart and vascular diseased patients was stopped 18 months early when it was found that adding a high-dose of niacin (Vitamin B-3) to raise the good cholesterol HDL in the subjects along with a statin drug (Zocor), does not reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. After tracking the patients for 32 months, they found the risk of stroke was actually elevated slightly even though the HDL did increase (meaning not all HDL is good?). But, after selling $927 million worth of Niaspan (the drug with niacin) last year, Abbot Laboratories isn't giving up. The Food and Drug Administration is not ready to pull the plug on the drug either, until they've had a chance to study the trial data.
So that's where most of your donation dollars go.
It reminds me of the American Heart Association, Honolulu. Every year the Heart Association holds posh fundraisers like the Heart Ball with a menu of meat, meat and more meat. Instead of recommending safe lifestyle changes with the use of foods high in Omega-fatty 3 acids which support the growth of good cholesterol, like Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds, and fruits, vegetables, and nuts loaded with fiber that can lower the LDL (the bad cholesterol), dollars are sunk into studies, drugs and supplements.
And what has their track record been?
Heart Disease is still the number one killer along with Stroke, coming in at number two. In a recent HONOLULU MAGAZINE article, "What's Killing Us," dismal statistics for Hawaii show, Heart Disease claimed the lives of 1,275 in 2008, while in 2010, 9,627 people died. The recent Hawaii State Data Book shows 629 lives claimed by Stroke in 2008. Let's Eat Plants Not Pills!
