Feature Article The Roots of Red Ribbon Week
Each and every year schools around the country, including Fairmont Private School, set aside one week in October for Red Ribbon Week. Each year the students wear a red wristband throughout the week without much of a thought as to why we designate this week as Red Ribbon Week.
Red Ribbon Week was officially proclaimed by Congress in 1988, and there were many events that led up to Congress' official declaration.
In 1985, a team of Drug Enforcement Agency officers who were kidnapped and subsequently murdered by Mexican drug cartels. These murders came as retaliation for agent Enrique "Kiki" Camerena's efforts to eradicate a huge drug trafficking operation in Mexico.
To honor Kiki Camerena, people in California began wearing red ribbons as a symbol to encourage people to "Say 'No' to Drugs" and started "Camarena Clubs" to encourage high school students to pledge to live a drug-free life. Eventually, the clubs grew and caught the attention of Nancy Reagan, then First Lady of the United States. With her help, they were able to have Congress proclaim an official "Red Ribbon Week" in 1988.
Next week, during Mable's Red Ribbon Week, don't forget to wear your red wristband proudly and declare "NO" to drugs and alcohol in honor of agent Camerena and his hard work in fighting against drugs. Students will also have free dress, "Wear Red," on Wednesday, October 19.
