Fairmont Parent Association's Back-to-School Picnic
The Fairmont Parent Association (FPA) will host a Back-to-School Picnic on Saturday, September 17, 2011, from 12:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m on the Mable field. The In-N-Out truck will be here during the picnic from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Additionally, the pool will be open and staffed with a lifeguard; there will be a DJ, a waterslide, and an ice cream truck! To the Book Fair and Beyond!
Mable's twice yearly Book Fair will begin on Monday, September 19. Students will have a preview of the Book Fair during their PE class on Monday. The Book Fair is open Monday - Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Friday, the Book Fair will close at 1:00 p.m. To learn more about the Book Fair you can visit the library's Blackboard page or you can see more on Scholastic. The Library is also looking for additional parent volunteers to help out during the Book Fair.If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mrs. Lloyd or Mrs. Kuka in the library at mablelibrary@fairmontschools.com.
Grandparents Day
Mable will host a celebration breakfast for all of our grandparents on Wednesday, September 21. Festivities will kick off with our weekly flag salute presented by Mrs. Schoening's class. Immediately following flag salute, there will be a continental breakfast served on the back playground. After breakfast, students will have a chance to give their grandparents a tour of the campus, visit their classroom, and stop by the book fair. Please complete this RSVP form and turn it in to your child's homeroom teacher. |

Samantha T. - Mable's "Pageant Master"
 Each summer, the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach presents Pageant of the Masters. Pageant of the Masters is a production of living pictures. This summer's theme, "Only Make Believe," transported watchers from Greek Mythology to outer space and from Neverland to Sleepy Hollow. The Pageant moves its audience through these varied landscapes with living recreations of magazine covers, lithographs, illustrations, paintings, and sculptures.
This summer, Samantha T. from Mrs. Wagner's 1st grade class participated in the Pageant of the Masters. She was featured in an oil painting by John Falter, titled "Trick or Treating in the Burbs." This painting was featured as the Halloween 1958 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. It depicts a mother with 5 children and two dogs on Halloween night.This group of trick-or-treaters walks down a suburban street on Halloween night. Samantha plays the part of a child dressed as a green goblin.
When talking with Samantha about her experience with Pageant of the Masters, she told us that to play the part of the goblin in the picture she had to wear a painted cloth over her clothes, a mask and a hair covering in the same color as her mask. The best part of the performance, Samantha says, was "being on stage and walking across the stage." Samantha went on, "The stage was almost the size of our classroom." She really enjoyed the fact that her picture was chosen to be the picture that was used to show the audience how each picture was staged. Samantha said the hardest part of the experience was "standing still on stage." When asked how long they had to stand still (with the assistance of a safety belt) Samantha answered, "99 seconds." Besides the picture she was in, her favorite picture was "Confabulation of Dragons" by Scott Gustafson.
