Citron Kindergartners "Plant Their Roots"
As we  all know, traditions play an important role in a child's life, and many of those traditions come from our children's school experiences. It is our hope that the result of these experiences will bring lasting memories that our students can look back upon with a sense of enjoyment and pride.
Last Friday, our Citron kindergartners took part in one of our favorite traditions--planting their tree at Mable. The children "plant their roots" at Mable as a way of looking forward to continuing their Fairmont education.
The students began their adventure by riding over on the bus with their teachers, Mrs. Bauman, Dr. Molina, and Miss Young. After learning about their tree from representatives from the City of Anaheim, the children helped plant the tree and insure that it got off to a healthy start. They then had the chance to meet our staff, tour the school, and most importantly, eat pizza and play on the playground. They had a wonderful time as did all of us here at Mable.
We hope that this tradition will remain with the children as a fond memory as they travel their educational path to their future.

 WordMasters Challenge
A team of students representing the Mable Campus of Fairmont Private Schools recently won highest honors in the WordMasters Challenge--a national language arts competition entered by approximately 220,000 students annually, which consists of three separate meets held at intervals during the school year.
Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the Challenge, and coached by Donna Riley, the school's seventh graders tied for tenth place in the nation in the year's first meet, held in December. There were 173 school teams competing at this grade level and in this division.
Seven of the school's students won highest honors for individual achievement as well: Fourth graders Lina Kim and Joseph Kim; seventh graders Alec Hsing, Emily Liu, Kaitlynn Cho, and Michelle Phan; and eighth grader Jesse Wu. All earned perfect scores in meets for their grade levels, while in the entire country only 146 fourth graders, 83 seventh graders, and 51 eighth graders did so.
Other students who achieved outstanding results in the meet included third graders Carly Minow and Alexisse Yoo; fourth graders Emaad Razzak, Mei Johnson, Lauren Ju, Taylor Tran, Ariana Chow, and Dayne Tran; fifth graders Gurveer Singh, Jocelyn Liu, Tammie Nguyen, Lauren Kang, Yasmin Veys and Tejal Patel; sixth graders Jessie Lin, Tara Falt, Ejay Cho, Leena Surapaneni, Alison Oh, McKenna Sainburg, and Yvana Han; seventh graders Kitty Jia, Jade Audon, Jeremy Tan, Derrick Li, Liza Mathews, Nick Palmer, Tanner Lemke, Leanne Agulto, and Alfred Mustafa; and eighth graders Michael Niu, Jessica Chung, Milan Mistry, Meeran Ismail, Skylar Hess, and Ryan Han.
The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the Challenge analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Though most vocabulary-boosting and analogy-solving activities have been created for high school students, the WordMasters materials have been specifically designed for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for able and interested children who rise to the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.
The WordMasters Challenge has been administered for the past 24 years by a company based in Allendale, New Jersey, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. The students will participate in two more WordMasters meets during coming months. Medals and certificates will be awarded in June to those who achieve and/or improve the most in the course of the year.

 Imagination Celebration Poster Contest
The Imagination Celebration Poster Contest just announced that the artwork of Mable seventh grader Katie Ann McAllister was chosen from over 500 entries as one of the 24 finalists selected for the 2011 Imagination Celebration art exhibition this spring.
In addition, the 24 finalists will be showcased on SparkOC.com where the public can view their work and vote on their favorite piece. Voting will be available between January 21 and February 4th. Please spread the word and invite friends and family to cast their vote. The People's choice winner will receive four tickets to Disneyland and a $100.00 cash prize as well as being featured on Spark OC during the Imagination Celebration.
Congratulations to Katie for working so hard on this project.
