Forget the cat; get the plants in!!

Every early winter, the warning goes out.  Usually it is delivered by your local TV news team:  Cover or bring in the plants.  In  the spring, people love to drag out the indoor plants when the danger of freeze or cold weather is over. Then, sometime during the fall when the chance of cold is in the air, drag them back in.  That's That's OK, if you are willing to treat your plants as pets, or to some, as members of the family.

TRAVELLING PLANTS

But does this travelling plant system really  accomplish the objective?  For most, the object of plants is design.  No one can deny that a healthy, corner filling plant is one of the strongest design statements in the room. However, the travelling plant may not meet this description.

Plants habituate to conditions that are within their range of environmental acceptability. The concept of improving the plant's living environment is why plants are brought outdoors.  Invariably the plant will receive better light outdoors and watering is easier.  Under these conditions the plants thrive!  When it is time to return them to that semi-lit corner in the living room, they go into  a period of reverse acclimation, and decline barely holding on until next spring.  This tells me that the original plant selection was incorrect for the space.  It is a better strategy to select the right plants for the right places so they can improve our living environment all year long. Properly selected, there is a plant shape and size suitable to practically every indoor location and you don't have to let them in and out like the cat.

Even so, plants have a life expectancy which varies depending upon the environment.  A plant may last a year or ten years.  Unlike pets, a plant should be considered a perishable item.  Have no regrets  if your plant lived  a reasonable life expectancy. Toss out the old one and buy  a fresh one. Your local plant professional can help you make the right selection, suitable to your environment and life style.

Oh, and seriously, don't forget the cat!

PLANT BENEFIT:  Plants Lower the Shading Coefficient

Beautiful indoor plants can be used for shading to cool building interiors.  An architect in Germany has created a system referred to as 'Green Solar Architecture' in which the interior climate is actually regulated with plants. The species selected include those which shed leaves over the winter, allowing for more solar energy to enter the building and flourish in the summer providing shade.  Interior plant installations can create spaces of significant shade at all times of the day and throughout the year. Plants possess a natural ability to draw their system towards a light source, which can act as an indoor awning while producing a beautiful fluid effect across the space.

Whether indoor spaces include trees of 25 feet or simply small plants near a window, the need for alternative means of shading can be eliminated while maintaining the valuable natural view. This multi-purpose method of shading becomes much more cost-effective than alternative engineered products.  Another great reason to keep it green and healthy!
