Tip of the Month

With the summer storms we are experiencing, I'm reminded of a bathing tip for your birds.  Running a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer while misting your bird (or providing a bowl of water for bathing) can promote a positive response.  It is speculated that the noise reminds them of a thunderstorm and will make them receptive to bathing.  Each morning at Parrot U several of our birds try to bathe by hitting the water bottle tube to get wet while the store is being vacuumed.  Our precious Moe has a water cup instead of bottle and he takes a huge bath almost every day!  And speaking of hair dryers, your bird may love being "blown out" but it defeats one of the purposes of bathing.  They need the moisture for good feather condition.

PickleSmall Birds - BIG LOVE adoption program for Budgies and Cockatiels launches on July 17.  We have many wonderful budgies and cockatiels that deserve good homes.  Scholarships are available to cover adoption fees. Please tell your friends who might be interested in adding to their flock or adopting birds that are easy to care for and suitable for apartment or condo living.

Companion Parrots Re-homed is now on Facebook. Get the latest information on our special events and new birds, read stories of featured birds and tell us what you think. And please help spread the word by passing this newsletter to your friends who are interested in birds or animal welfare issues and asking them to join our mailing list.  Our success and the welfare of the birds, depends on the size and interest of our community of friends and supporters.

Meet the Birds
Budgie Buddies & Cockatiel Pals Available for Adoption

Maximilian's Pionus JadeThia
Species: Cockatiel
Age: 3

Thia is a beautiful female Pearl Cockatiel whose owner could no longer care for her.  Her favorite pastime is flying!  She has lots of love and companionship to offer for many years to come.  Very unusual for a female, Thia can say "I love you."

Parrotlets Tina & TimBob's Wives
Species: Budgies
Ages: various

Bob's Wives are a flock of budgies we have available for adoption. All were either found outdoors and/or turned in to Animal Control. Hours of enjoyment can be obtained by just letting them be themselves. The drama over receiving Bob's attention is comical and their chatter is so soothing. They are a continuing soap opera. Bob, a Parrot University mascot, serves as a foster companion to the others until they find a home.

"Animal Control Seven"
Cockatiel FlockSpecies: Cockatiels
Ages: late teens

"Animal Control Seven" is a flock of five males and two females who are retired breeders. After serving their owner for his financial gain, they were tossed aside and dumped at Animal Control. They are such a wonderful, compatible group with a couple of real standout personalities.  Romeo absolutely sings his heart out to any bird that will listen and does lots of wild bird vocalizations.  None in this group are amenable to hand taming and it shouldn't be asked of them -- they are such a delight to just let them be themselves. They deserve a wonderful retirement home. Potential adopters should consider homing at least two or three from this group.

Small Birds - BIG LOVE
Fast track adoption program for Budgies & Cockatiels.    Scholarships Available

PickleCompanion Parrots Re-homed is seeking good homes for our Budgies and Cockatiels.
To help our small birds find homes, the 'Small Birds - BIG LOVE' adoption program features:
  • Adoption Fast Track - most adopters will attend only Parrot 101 - that's one class instead of two or more.  All classes are free.
  • Scholarships - some of our donors and friends are offering a limited number of scholarships to cover adoption fees.
PickleWe have some wonderful Budgies and Cockatiels available for adoption. These little birds with big personalities will capture your heart with their sweet sounds and playful antics. They're easy to care for and are suitable for apartments and condos.

A Flock of Your Own? These little birds enjoy the company of others and love to be part of a flock.  If your time won't permit a lot of one-on-one time with your new bird, then consider providing a home for two or more birds.

Can't adopt right now?  Then please consider a donation to the BIG LOVE Scholarship Fund.

CPR and Parrot Univesity

PickleParrot University (Parrot U) and Companion Parrots Re-homed (CPR) are two organizations that together create a unique niche in the pet bird industry. CPR was organized because of the growing need to place parrots in new homes due to owner surrender, escape or rescue from poor living conditions. Considering the longevity of a parrot's life it is not uncommon for a bird to have several homes during its lifetime. Once a pet bird has been re-homed, Parrot University is a total resource for keeping that bird healthy and happy.  Parrot University's services are available to all pet bird owners as well as to those adopting birds from CPR.

Companion Parrots Re-homed (CPR) is a 501(c)(3) all volunteer nonprofit organization whose purpose is to rescue companion parrots from harmful or unwanted situations, to accept surrendered, found or injured parrots, and to adopt these birds to qualified homes. The group started helping birds in 2003. CPR was founded in 2006 and received nonprofit status in 2008. Parrot University serves as an 'orphanage' for the parrots of CPR until they find their new, loving homes.

Parrots come to CPR for a variety of reasons. Sometimes surrender of parrots is beyond the owner's control such as the couple who had a new baby that was allergic to the couple's African Grey Parrot or the woman who recently developed a respiratory condition and the dander from her Macaw worsened her condition. She only surrendered her beloved Macaw when her doctor insisted she do so. Parrots also find their way to CPR because of abandonment such as the pair of cockatiels found in a cage by the side of the road or the Amazon Parrot found at the front door of a pet shop one morning. No matter what the reason, the parrots of CPR are all treated equally. Each bird is examined by an avian vet with appropriate lab work and testing. After a 30 day quarantine period the bird takes up residence at Parrot U until it is adopted.

Parrot University is preparing to celebrate its 4 year anniversary on July 17th along with Beau's Big Birdie Birthday Bash. Parrot U sells only high quality food, toys, and accessories for pet bird owners. In addition to carrying everything imaginable to keep a pet bird healthy and happy Parrot U has the only parrot-only bio-security boarding facility with both private and communal boarding rooms in the area. What is bio-security? Every parrot boarding at Parrot U must have an annual vet check and psittacosis testing when boarding communal. Each time staff enter and leave a boarding room they sanitize their shoes and hands to lessen the possibility of contamination from bird to bird. Each boarding room and the central units have individual air purifiers with UV sterilization and HEPA filters. Rooms are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between uses. Parrot U also has the only library in the area with comprehensive parrot related material. Reference material varies from species specific books and magazines to videos on behavioral problems.

Once a parrot is adopted from CPR, Parrot U staff work to establish a lasting relationship with each adopter. Store personnel are always available to offer support and guidance to ensure each bird adopted transitions smoothly into their new family.

Unfortunately, there are currently many more birds waiting to enter the CPR program than there are adoptive families. CPR has a waiting list of 4-6 months for new birds to enter the program. You can help by spreading the news of what we do to family, friends, and business associates. Also, volunteers are needed to help care for CPR's parrots and to educate the public in what we do. You can support CPR by shopping at Parrot U -- Parrot U product sales help ensure the birds of CPR have a happy place to live until they find their new loving home. We welcome you to visit us and get to know the birds of Companion Parrots Re-homed living at Parrot University.
Volunteer Corner
 Special Recognition...
...goes to Val Vajay and Judy Johnson, two new volunteers, for all their efforts.  Neither came to CPR as bird owners, just people willing to help.

Val, a 3rd grade teacher, has worked several recent adoption events and hangs out at Parrot U quite a bit, now that school is out.  We all believe there is a bird in her future, as soon as one chooses her.

Judy, a retired nurse, comes to Parrot U to help out most Sundays and Mondays.  She cleans, she chops, she dusts, she wipes up poop....all and more you would ever want in a volunteer.  She has started the adoption process and will soon have a bird of her own at home.

All of our board members are also volunteers.  This month we want to send a special thanks to one of them.

Debbie Foster has worked tirelessly to organize and publicize Beau's Big Birdie Birthday Bash to be held on July 17.  She produces the Petfinder listings and videos, which have brought us lots of interest in adoption.  She is also currently working on our fundraiser calendar for next year, taking all the pictures and doing all the editing.  Plus, she contributes photos, events, videos and bios, to our new Facebook presence.

Debbie is also responsible for getting pictures of adoptable birds into the local newspapers as well as generating radio and TV publicity. She works adoption tables, constantly promotes CPR & Parrot U throughout the community, and is an active CPR Board Member.

If you'd like to volunteer please contact us at info@CompanionParrots.org

Heartfelt thanks to all of our volunteers!
