Industry Update - U.S. Wood Supplies Impacted by Combination of Events

Chilean Earthquake Damage

The unusual combination of winter storms in the U.S., Earthquakes in Chile and a controversial government program has impacted the supply of wood fiber in the U.S.

A succession of severe winter storms across the country, particularly in the Northeast, has impacted logistics, slowed housing starts and mill production.  The recent series of earthquakes in Chile has disrupted supply chains and caused production facilities in that country to scale back or halt operations entirely.  The Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) has had the unintended impact of diverting wood sawdust, chips and shavings for use as heat, power, biobased products or biofuels instead of composite wood products.

The RISI, through its International Woodfiber Report (IWR), indicated that wood fiber supplies have dwindled to critical lows, especially in the Southern U.S., and that it will take several weeks "at best" to return to stability.  Although prices are being held down by a series of facilities shutting down for maintenance, many mill companies have experienced higher overall wood fiber prices.

In February, the Composite Panel Association successfully led an industry coalition to freeze any new funding for BCAP participants beyond the pending contracts and is working to revise the program.  Industry reports indicate that wood fiber suppliers are meeting this challenge by expanding and diversifying their sources.

How will the supply squeeze affect your bottom line?  We expect price increases from our vendors over the next few weeks and some have already notified us that they are in the midst of re-evaluating their pricing.

Help your company mitigate the effects of possible price increases by contacting your MJB Wood Group Representative today.  MJB has spent decades building hundreds of strategic relationships, so that we can get you the materials you need, when you need them, where you need them, and in the most convenient and cost-effective way possible.
