Summer 2011 Newsletter

Hello from the RASD Board!

RASD had a very successful LILC with some wonderful programs. First off was Graphic Novels: All Grown Up presented by Mark Siegel and Gina Gagliano from First Second Books. The MOSAIC Committee and SCLA sponsored the program Learning English is a Library Affair with speakers Beth Donovan and Carmen Navarro-Gao from Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library. The PR and Marketing Committee arranged a Lunch and Learn with a panel of Librarians reviewing practical ways of using social networking sites and e-newsletters to publicize library programs, services and events.

Do you want to join the RASD team? Your opportunity awaits as RASD will be having its annual election this Fall for the positions of Vice President/President elect and Secretary. If you are interested in running for one of these positions please contact current RASD President Robert Cognato at Deer Park Public Library or rcognato@gmail.com.

Some important future events we don't want you to miss:
**RASD Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday
evening October 6th. We will announce very soon where the dinner will be.
**Health Concerns Meeting/Breakfast and Workshop will be held on Wednesday morning October 19th at SCLS. The topic for discussion is substance abuse and one of the presenters will be Dr. Stephen Dewey.

Have a Very Fun and Safe Summer!

DASL NEWS

**The Division of Academic and Special Libraries welcomed library students to its second in a series of roundtable panel discussions this spring.   "Connecting Curriculum to Career: Crossing the Bridge from Library School to the Real World," was held in April at Suffolk County Community College  in Selden.  Participating panelists were Deborah Dolan, Hofstra University; Sonia Frangella,  Dowling College/Recent MLS Graduate, Palmer School ; David Jank, Palmer School of Library & Information Science ; Gwen Loeffler, Special Librarian, Wunderman marketing; Claudia McGivney, Dowling College.  Moderator was Chris Kretz, Dowling College.

**Our division was proud to present author Lawrence Epstein as a speaker at the Long Island Library Conference in May.  Dr. Epstein  is the author of six books, including The Haunted Smile: The Story of Jewish Comedians in America (2001) and Political Folk Music in America from Its Origins to Bob Dylan (2010). He currently writes for the blogs "The Dylan Watch" and "Larry Epstein's Culture Watch," for "The Best American Poetry Blog" and "Jewish True Tales" (www.JewishTrueTales.com) of which he is the founder.

**DASL members, Michael Aloi and Marjorie Fusco, both from Dowling College, and Susan Ketcham of L.I.U., have co-authored, "Digital Collections Worldwide: An Annotated Directory."  This reference book provides an opportunity for readers to access digitized historical documents, ancient manuscripts, photographs, video, audio recordings, web cams, and much more on the Web.  The collections described reflect the national heritage of each country.  As described in the forward by Cheryl LaGuardia this cutting-edge book, "is an invaluable resource for anyone wishing to take full advantage of what the web has to offer, the extensively annotated and thoroughly indexed guide organized and describes the contents of thousands of important digital collection around the globe."  "A companion website gives librarians and researchers all of the links found in the book so researchers can avoid transcribing the often-lengthy URLs."

SACHEM RELAY FOR LIFE

The Sachem Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society was a huge success!  It was held at Sachem North High School, Saturday June 11- Sunday, June 12 and Librarians for Life had two teams with a total of 20 people walking.  We raised almost $6,000 between the two teams and had a great turnout at the event.  Unfortunately, it rained - a lot - and the event got postponed for a bit and then called off completely at around 11:45 p.m. because of possible thunderstorms.

I was absolutely amazed at the outpouring of support, food, and tents that the teams brought!  Suffice it to say, we didn't starve that nigh

t and I will not need to buy toilet paper for the next six months!

SUFFOLK COUNTY JAILS LIBRARY SERVICE COMMITTEE

The goal of the Suffolk County Jails Service Committee is to encourage libraries to provide paperback books of a nonviolent nature to the jails in Yaphank and Riverhead and to use the money obtained through the SCLS to purchase new paperbacks and to order subscriptions to appropriate magazines for the jails.  In addition, this year funds from the Jail Grant Program were used to buy books to support the work of the chaplains in the jails and the teachers of the GED

programs.

Periodically, the Committee appeals to remind its readers of Suffolk Libraries and Friends of the Library groups to generously send these nonviolent paperback books and appropriate magazines to the jails through the Suffolk Cooperative Library System and to label the boxes as follows:

To: SCLS for Riverhead Jail

OR To: SCLS for Yaphank Jail, Attn: Law Librarian

Sister Joan Ryan of St. Joseph's College Library and Marjorie Fusco of Dowling College Library currently serve on the Suffolk County Jails Service Committee.  Sister Joan arranges the purchase of paperbacks for the jail from Baker and Taylor.  Marjorie represents the committee at the SCLA Board meetings.  We welcome other volunteers to help us. If you can oversee the collection and shipping for your library--you will be assisting some of the neediest patrons of Suffolk County.

For further information, please contact: Sister Joan Ryan, Callahan Library, St. Joseph's College, 25 Audubon Avenue, Patchogue, NY 11772-2399, (631-447-3231), or Marjorie Fusco, Dowling College, Oakdale NY 11769, (631-244-3284).

SCLA-LIST

The Suffolk County Library Association's listserv, SCLA-LIST is now over twelve years old.  It has been a great source to advertise library jobs, announce a conferences and workshops and to get advice from colleagues in neighboring libraries.  Unlike many other professional listservs, messages on the SCLA-LIST are usually on topic. Likewise there have only been a handful of "flame wars" throughout the SCLA-LIST's long history and these happened in the early days of the listserv.

There are currently nearly 1,500 subscribers to the SCLA-LIST listserv.  If are not on the SCLA-LIST, there is no better time to join.  Likewise, if you have new staff in your library, please let them know about the SCLA-LIST listserv. Instructions on how to join can be found at:

SCLA-LIST Listserv

The lucky person that is the 1,500th subscriber will win a free year's membership to SCLA!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

On behalf of SCLA, Jackie Narkiewicz attended the Habitat For Humanity house dedication for the Hille family on February 18. We were able to walk around the house and look around before the dedication started.  It was a truly moving event that was attended by all of the agencies who helped build the house and lots of politicians (Steve Levy, Mark Lesko, Brookhaven Town Supervisor).  The family seemed very touched and a bit overwhelmed by the ceremony and all the gifts they received.  Our baskets were on display in the kitchen.

Thank you,

The SCLA Board
