Sachem Relay for Life

SCLA's Community Service Committee participated in the Sachem Relay For Life, June 5-6, 2010 at Sachem North High School in Ronkonkoma.  We had two teams, aptly named "Librarians For Life" and "Librarians For Life Part Deux" who walked the track from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.  We fundraised before the event and were able to raise over $3,000 between the teams for the American Cancer Society.

The Relay began with a Survivors' Reception at 5:00 p.m., which included food, drinks and a cake to commemorate the number of birthdays Survivors have celebrated since their diagnosis.  The Reception was followed by a Survivors' Lap at 6:00 p.m. and, after one lap, the Survivors were joined by caregivers and friends on the second lap.  It was very emotional and gratifying to watch the survivors in purple shirts walk around the track and it put a more personal face on the fight against cancer.  All teams were allowed to walk after the second Survivors' Lap.

There were 68 teams at the Relay and almost 700 people who participated.  The event raised over $62,000 for the American Cancer Society.

SCLA was well represented by Marsha Greenspan, Tom Gorman, Megan Sala-James, Celia Vollmer, Rona Dressler, Moira Flynn, Lissetty Thomas, Tracy Van Dyne, Paula Bornstein and myself.  It was a wonderful opportunity to get to know fellow team members.  I was lucky enough to have both my daughters, Caitlin and Michele, on my team and it was great to spend some quality time with them - nothing like having a "captive audience" while you are walking the track.

We had a lot of fun during the Relay and had an overabundance of food, drinks, and toilet paper (for the port-a-potties).  It was an exhausting night, but one of the most gratifying things I have ever done.   You were able to really get to know your teammates during those 12 hours.

I am already looking forward to next year's Relay!  Who wants to join the team for next year?

SSD News
by Judith Romano, President

The SSD committee has had another productive year, thanks to the time, creativity and effort and of our members, many of which are new to the board.

Our Annual Roundtable, Wednesday March 10, 2010 at Brentwood Library was a success. It was attended by 72 people who had the opportunity to sit with their colleagues with refreshments and discuss job related issues. Many received lovely centerpieces made by Anne Marie Hoffmann which were raffled off, and of course, the 50/50 raffle of which half the proceeds went to the Continuing Education Award scholarship fund.

On May 6, 2010, the SSD committee sponsored a program at the LILC titled "Solving Sticky People Problems"..... a necessary ingredient in your library's success recipe!" by Tim McHeffey. It was quite a success, especially considering it was the latest session and we had a turnout of 175 people. It was very enjoyable and laughs were had by all. Tim also gave out free autographed books.

We're also preparing for other wonderful programs such as the Annual Fall luncheon at West Islip Library on October 13, 2010, and computer classes in the fall which will be announced.

Along with new members, we have new ideas and some great new improvements. Before the end of the year you will see our new logo and trademark, as well as website. We're all very excited about it. With each group of new members, the SSD grows with new ideas and helpful programs to help staff.

Everyone has an essential ingredient to share. Join SSD and share yours! Check out the website http://scla.net/ssd and/or contact us at SSD at ssd@suffolk.lib.ny.us.

2010 Long Island Library Conference

The 35th annual Long Island Library Conference has come and gone.  Thanks to all attendees, speakers, and vendors.  Thanks to all those that arranged for the wonderful programs, and special thanks to a wonderful committee who put in endless hours both during meetings and on their own time to make this such a magnificent conference.

It has been a great honor and privilege to have worked on the Long Island Library Conference committee since the 2004 conference.  I have meet many amazing people in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the past seven years and look forward to what the library world has in store for me over the next few years.  I wish Ken Bellafiore and his new committee all the best for a wonderful and successful 2011 Conference.
