2010 Long Island Reads Pick is in!

The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millward

The 26th U.S. president, failing re-election, goes on an adventure that nearly kills him. In an admirable debut, historian and National Geographic contributor Candice Millard records Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of a hitherto uncharted river in the heart of the Amazon and turns the incredible story of Teddy Roosevelt's South American adventure into one that easily matches an Indiana Jones screen adventure.

Why River of Doubt?
River of Doubt coverTeddy Roosevelt lived on Long Island from 1885 until his death in 1919.
The book covers a part of Teddy Roosevelt's life that is both fascinating and not well known.
The book will appeal to readers of American history, Long Island History, American Presidents, adventure stories, and travel narratives.

River of Doubt is available in hardcover, paperback, large type, audio CD and downloadable audio.  Programming opportunities are numerous.

The Committee is communicating with author, Candice Millard
and hopes to host a author event next Spring.

When?
Long Island Reads takes place annually throughout the month of April to coincide with National Library Week, which in 2010 is April 11-17.
The Programming Guide, Readers' Guide, posters and flyers, and other information will go out to all libraries as soon as possible.

RASD News
I was reading the September issue of O Magazine and I saw a quote from Shirley Ann Jackson, President of RPI, that said, "Connectivity is key; it is what creates and strengthens your web of opportunity. The more connected you are, and the stronger your connections, the more effective you will be in obtaining and using power to achieve your goals".  It made me think of my fellow librarians who are great at sharing information with the public and each other.  It further made me think of RASD and all of its committees, and the great work they do presenting programs, sharing knowledge, and connecting us all.

In these difficult economic times, we need each other even more, please join a committee and share your time and talents with your colleagues.  The following are some of the activities that the committees will be presenting this fall.

The Annual RASD dinner was held at the Mill Pond Country Club in Medford, on September 24. The guest speaker was Nahid Rachlin, author of Persian Girls.  Attendees were eligible for many lovely gifts and prizes.

The annual Health Concerns Breakfast/Meeting/Workshop will be held at SCLS on October 21, staring at 9:00 a.m.  The workshop will be on Anxiety and the speakers will be Psychiatrist Julian Herskowitz and Colleen Merlo, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association in Suffolk.  Our 2010 slate of officers will be announced at the meeting.  All are welcome to attend.  Come for breakfast.

Libraries will be involved again this year at the Historic Suffolk County Event celebrating Archives Month.  Library and historical society displays will be at the Setauket Neighborhood House, on October 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Look for more information about a program on bias awareness, with speaker Loida Santos that will be presented by MOSAIC.

If you are in the habit of viewing and using the great bibliographies created by the Reader's Advisory Committee, look for their next one on Period Fiction from 1800 and Earlier.

You will find information about RASD and all of its programs on our web page at (scla.net/rasd/mainpg.htm). Stay connected!

The SSD Annual Luncheon Meeting was held at the Bourne Mansion in Oakdale on October 7, 2009.  The keynote speaker was Tim McHeffey from Innovative Business Educators who spoke on Solving Sticky People Problems ...Using the PHP Formula.  Tim McHeffey demonstrated how this powerful communication technique can help immensely in the quest to give better service to our external customers (patrons), as well as our internal customers (fellow employees). Participants were invited to bring with them their most prickly, tricky issues (personal but not confidential) to be discussed and demonstrate how powerfully PHP can revolutionize our dialogues, curbing some of our stress in the process.  Each attendee was invited to download a free "Sampler Edition" of four chapters of the upcoming book,"Solving Sticky People Problems."

Letter from the President

Dear Colleagues:

This year SCLA is celebrating its 70th Anniversary. It has been an honor to serve as President during our 70th year. I would like to thank the terrific SCLA Board for being both dedicated and a lot of fun. I would especially like to thank all of you who have made SCLA Board Meetings brief, concise and never boring. I would also like to thank all of my friends and colleagues who have offered me advice and support throughout the year. I wish Brian Adams, Vice-President/President Elect the best of luck next year. It has been great working with Brian and I know he will make a wonderful President.

I have been reading old newsletters from our archives to get some insight into SCLA's history.  It is really interesting to read what was important to SCLA members then and now. Ironically, not much has changed. In 1945 SCLA launched the first newsletter and in 2009 we have launched our first online newsletter. Since at least 1945 (and I'm sure before that) SCLA members were lobbying Albany for more funding for libraries. It is both discouraging that the lobbying never ends and heartening that SCLA has been in the forefront of lobbying efforts since our inception. You will hear more about information from SCLA's archives at our Annual Dinner on November 20th.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Annual Dinner.

Best regards,
Susan Sloan
SCLA President
