Community Services Committee
A new committee of the SCLA Board, the Community Services Committee, will actively pursue a variety of causes in Suffolk County that include participation, fundraising, and dissemination of information relating to volunteer opportunities to the library community.
We are working on our first initiative that will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk.

CATS News
It's important that those of us involved with implementing technology in our libraries have a venue to share and learn. There's no need to "re-invent the wheel" each time we introduce a new product or service. Very often, one of our colleagues has already gone through the same process, and can make our job easier by sharing his or her experiences.
With that in mind, CATS is working toward establishing a new Computer User Group committee. The goal of the committee would be to organize regular meetings where I.T. staff could come together to share and discuss, face-to-face, some of the things they're working on in their libraries-similar to what we're already doing for our catalogers with the CATS Cataloging Roundtable meetings. As of this writing, there's nothing official yet, but we hope to have everything put together soon. Be sure to check our website: http://cats.suffolk.lib.ny.us for more information.
I'm excited about the programs we'll be offering this year. At the Long Island Library Conference we're presenting "Looking Beyond the Clouds: Enhancing Library Services through Social Tagging." In this program, Emily Clasper from SCLS will discuss and demonstrate tagging, its basis, uses and benefits to the library interfaces of the twenty-first century. On June 16 (10:00 a.m., at SCLS) we'll be presenting our next CATS Cataloging Roundtable meeting. Hosted by Michael Aloi from Dowling College, this program will provide an opportunity to discuss cataloging problems and practices in a supportive environment. Our annual Library Tour will probably take place in early summer. In the Fall, we're planning on offering a hands-on program on Office 2007.

Message from the President
Welcome to the inaugural SCLA online newsletter. We are so excited to present this new and updated version of our newsletter. We decided to discontinue the print version because we were inspired by the theme of this year's Long Island Library Conference, "Go Green at Your Library." We also found that going green can save money. SCLA will save a significant amount of money by not printing and mailing the newsletter. In addition we hope to be able to send out more issues per year. I would like to thank Newsletter Editor, Jeri Cohen and Newsletter Committee members Tracy Van Dyne, Chris Krentz, and Neely McCahey for their time and effort and research to make the transition from print newsletter to virtual newsletter. We welcome your comments and suggestions on the newsletter. Please don't forget to stop by the SCLA booth at the Long Island Library Conference. There will be information, a fun giveaway and, of course, a raffle prize.
