Pelvic Floor Health
|
Kristin Kenny, PT, DPT
Though it is often difficult or uncomfortable to discuss,
countless men and women struggle with pelvic floor health issues on a daily
basis and are unaware of the treatment options available to them. If you experience any of the following,
pelvic floor physical therapy may help improve your quality of life: - Incontinence (urine or fecal)
-
Pelvic pain (including penile, urethral,
perineal, scrotal, rectal, vaginal or abdominal)
-
Erectile dysfunction
-
Constipation
-
Pregnancy and post-partum issues including organ
prolapse
The pelvic floor health program at ARC Physical Therapy of
Westmont focuses on the treatment of both men and women who suffer from any of
the above. Patients can expect private,
one-on-one treatment sessions with a skilled pelvic floor physical therapist
who will tailor treatment to their individual needs. Treatment may consist of:
Manual therapy to correct alignment of the spine
and pelvis, soft tissue massage, myofascial release, or strain counterstrain to
eliminate tender points and promote stretching of tight muscles
Biofeedback to assist in the up-training of weak
muscles or down-training of tight, guarded muscles
Exercises to improve strength of the pelvic
floor, abdominals and any surrounding musculature
Education on lifestyle changes to promote good
bowel/bladder and sexual health, as well as stress reduction techniques
Modalities such as TENS, ultrasound, and heat or
cold therapy to reduce pain, inflammation and muscle guarding
Don't let your suffering interfere with another night of
sleep, outings with friends or family or any of the activities you enjoy! Talk
with your doctor and feel free to contact ARC of Westmont with any questions or
concerns regarding whether pelvic floor physical therapy may be right for you.

May is National Fitness and Sports Month!
|
What better time to get up and go?
No matter what section of the country you live in, the month of May is
likely to be beautiful. Fresh new beginnings are everywhere: growing flowers,
budding trees, baby animals and birds. It's a great time to get outside, move,
and have fun. Here's another reason to get moving: Every May for the past 26
years, Americans have observed National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.
In his proclamation of the event, President Barack Obama stated, "As
the weather warms and invites us outside, I encourage Americans to consider the
many simple ways to add physical fitness activities to our lives. Incorporating
these habits can put a smile on your face, and it can also improve your
long-term health and well-being."
Being active is important for good health. Studies have shown that physical
activity can also make people happier and help them learn better. Who wouldn't
want to be healthy, happy, and wise?
Yes You Can What if you're not active or athletic? Don't
worry. There are a lot of activities out there for you. Walking is a great
activity for everybody no matter how fit they are. It's great exercise, and all
you need are a pair of sneakers and a safe place to walk. Still think you can't
do it? C. J. Cain, a physical education teacher, says he has this conversation with his students every day.
"Yes, you can do it," he tells them. "You're not competing
against anybody. Your health is yours alone." What are you waiting for? Get up and go!

Things Your Burglar Won't Tell You-Part 2
| 6.
If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm
company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too
easy.
7. A good security company will alarm the window over the sink and the second floor windows. Often, second floor windows access the master bedroom and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion
detectors up there too.
8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock
your door - understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.
9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or
offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)
10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check
dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.
11. Helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.
