January/2010
Greetings!

Happy New Year!  A new year is a chance for a fresh start, as many people work on their list of New Year's Resolutions.  One popular resolution is to get fit and enjoy a healthier life.

ARC Physical Therapist Amy L. McDowell, PT, offers some suggestions for healthier living.  We have included details on the Texting While Driving Ban effective in Illinois as of January 1, 2010.   As always, we hope you enjoy the Spotlight Recipe of the Month.
Getting A Good Start To Your New Year
Amy L. McDowell, PT

January marks the beginning of a new year and for many people the start of what will hopefully be a new routine of healthier living.  New diet and exercise routines are embarked upon.  Health clubs and gyms become as crowded in January as shopping malls were in December.  Often by mid-February though, the enthusiasm for new routines has worn thin.

One type of exercise that in my experience people are more likely to stick with is Pilates.  Pilates is a form of conditioning exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1920's that incorporates strengthening and stretching exercises emphasizing the core muscles.  Specific routines are performed on an exercise mat and also on specially designed  equipment.  Pilates challenges the mind as well as the body by requiring participants to become more aware of their posture, alignment, breathing, and core control.  Clients often continue with their workouts year after year, modifying exercises as needed for injury or progressing to more advanced routines as their strength and flexibility improves.

If you are looking to become more active in the new year, here are some tips to help you stay consistent with your new regimen:

1.  Choose an activity that challenges your mind as well as your body by
making you think about what you are doing and how you are doing it.

2.  Invest in some private lessons with an experienced instructor to learn
proper technique and how to adapt exercises to make them safer
and/or more challenging for your body type.

3.  Listen to your body.  Minor aches and pains could develop into an
injury that disrupts your consistency with exercise.  If you experience
any problems that don't seem to be resolving, ask your ARC physical
therapist or call 877-6PAINFREE (877-672-4637) to schedule a
     free consultation.

Good luck and best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year!

New Year Brings Ban on Texting in Illinois

In an effort to reduce motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted drivers, Illinois will ban motorists from texting while driving beginning January 1, 2010. In addition, Illinois will ban the use of cell phones when driving in a school zone or highway construction zone.  All drivers age 19 or younger are banned from any cell phone use while operating a motor vehicle statewide.  The City of Chicago already has a ban in place on the use of hand-held cell phones while driving.

Studies show that distraction while driving, which includes talking on the phone or texting, is a leading cause of personal injury. Recent research finds 23-30 percent of motor vehicle accidents involve drivers who are not paying attention.

Beginning January 1, 2010 , while driving,  you cannot:

  • Send a text
  • Read a text
  • Send an email
  • Use the internet
  • Download ringtones
  • Send an instant message
However you may continue:

  • Use of your GPS (Garmin, TomTom, etc)
  • Use of the cell phone's GPS device
  • Text only if traffic is stopped and your car is in park or neutral
  • Text if pulled over on to the shoulder
  • Text if reporting an accident or injury

Violators face a $75 fine. Three or more violations could lead to suspension of your driver's license. One good way to avoid a violation for texting is to simply turn off your cell before you start your car.

It is important to remember that your first responsibility as a driver is your safety and the safety of others.
