I have been
treating patients for the past 4 ½ years in outpatient orthopedics. I have always loved being active and helping
others, so physical therapy is a natural fit for me. I have gained an interest
in women's health in the past 2 years and have completed training in treatment
of incontinence, pelvic floor pain, pregnancy and post-partum issues, and I am
excited to have all the resources here at ARC to enable me to treat in both
areas orthopedic injuries and women's health conditions.
In my time
away from work, I enjoy staying active at the gym, jogging, playing tennis,
walking my two crazy beagles. I also
love reading, cooking, trying new restaurants with my husband, tackling
crossword puzzles and spending time with friends and family.
Now that I
am settled with home and work transitions, I plan to return to philanthropic
ventures to give back to the community as I was so actively a part of while at Marquette.
I
appreciate my role as therapist in being able to educate and work with patients
to allow them not only understand their diagnoses but empower them to be an
active participant in their rehabilitation. Physical therapy is a rewarding
profession of which I am proud to be a member, and with the abundant
opportunities in my position here at Westmont,
I am excited to be a part of ARC's team. |

PREVENTION: ALPINE
SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING INJURIES
|
By: Christopher A. Fahs, PT, DPT
Skiing injuries have been reported to occur at a rate of 2-9
injuries per 100 skiing days.Trying to do something to prevent injury is a
very good idea. One of the most common
injuries in skiing is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. A recent study reported that injuries to the ACL
in the knee account for 47% of all skiing injuries. For females, the rate of injury when skiing
or snowboarding is twice the injury rate as compared to males. One study looking at female ski racers found
that their ACL injury rate was six times that of their male counterparts.
Physical conditioning may have a significant impact on
injury rates - that is, the better shape a skier or snowboarder is in, the less
chance of injury. Because skiing involves short-duration efforts of individual
runs as well as longer efforts of skiing all day, you will need to train for
strength and power, as well as endurance. With this in mind I would recommend
you concentrate your efforts in strengthening your core and your legs. Some good exercises for your legs include
squats, lunges, step-ups, and calf raises.
Some basic core exercises are crunches, Swiss Ball crunches, planks,
bridges, and medicine ball twists. I
prefer to alternate between several exercises in order to train my core
differently and to break up the monotony.
It is imperative that you perform all exercises with proper
technique. If you have not previously
been instructed in the proper form, please contact a physical therapist at ARC
for instruction or for referral to a reputable personal trainer. Hopefully this will allow you to enjoy your
ski trip and prevent a visit to ARC to rehabilitate your knee! |

devastating fall, there are inexpensive interventions available now that have
been shown to be effective by research studies.
