National PT Month
|
Amy L. Eggleston, MSPT

October is National
Physical Therapy Month!
National
Physical Therapy Month is a great opportunity for you to discover who physical
therapists are and how they can help improve your ability to move and function
while also benefiting your general fitness and health.
Physical
therapists are experts in the science of healing and the art of caring. They apply their extensive education and
clinical experience to an individualized, "hands on" approach for restoring
movement and function. Physical
therapists help people with a variety of conditions including (but not limited
to) orthopedic conditions such as low back pain or osteoarthritis, joint and
soft tissue injuries such as fractures or sprains, neurological conditions such
as stroke, sports injuries and workplace injuries including repetitive stress
disorders. If you are suffering from a
painful or debilitating condition physical therapists can improve your quality
of life, and in many cases do so without the need for surgery or prescription
drugs.
When you
see a physical therapist for the first time, he or she will examine you and,
based on their evaluation, develop a plan of care that promotes your ability to
move, reduces pain, restores function, improves your ability to perform daily
activities and prevents permanent disability.
You and your therapist will then work together to ensure your treatment
goals are met. Your therapist will guide
you through therapeutic exercises and functional training tailored to your
specific needs. Hands on manipulation of
the muscles, joints and soft tissues may be utilized to reduce pain and restore
movement.
It is
important to note that physical therapy services can only be provided by a
licensed physical therapist (or a qualified physical therapist assistant working
under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist). To learn more about how a physical therapist
can help you improve your quality of life please visit www.moveforwardpt.com or call/visit
any of our Advanced Rehabilitation Clinics locations.

Eliminating Pain without Medication
|
Move Forward PT
Many types of pain and inflammation can be reduced with the help
of a physical therapist, including low back pain, which affects up to
80 percent of Americans during their lifetime. Physical therapy that
mobilizes the spine along with specific exercises can help alleviate
the pain and can have long-lasting effects. If you are at risk
of heart disease, the American Heart Association encourages seeing a
physical therapist for the initial treatment of pain resulting from
tendinitis/bursitis, degenerative joint problems (osteoarthristis), and
inflammatory joint problems (rheumatoid arthritis), rather than
prescription pain medication. Physical therapists are a great
alternative to medication and surgery for musculoskeletal pain.
Research shows individuals who receive active physical therapy
experience greater improvement in function and decreased pain intensity. No
matter what part of your body hurts, a physical therapist can help you
alleviate or manage pain without costly medication or other invasive
methods. Did you know? One study found physical therapy helped 92% of patients with low back pain. Spine, July 2008
