2012 Statewide Educational Conferences
For caregivers, family members, professionals,
and people living with dementia
Kathleen J. Rusnak, Ph.D. is the featured speaker at both forums this year.
Dr. Rusnak, who has been the director of spiritual care and bereavement at The Connecticut Hospice (the first hospice in the United States), speaks to the spiritual surprises that emerge for individuals, patients and caregivers who struggle to make sense of their lives in the midst of serious illnesses.
The conferences will offer workshops for caregivers, family members, professionals, and people living with dementia. Six contact hours are available for professionals. Online registration will be available soon. To print a registration form: 2012 Conference Registration

Tim Sample to Perform in Orono to Benefit Walk to End Alzheimer's
Maine's premier humorist, Tim Sample recorded his first comedy album in 1979 and has released more than three dozen CD's, videos, DVD's and books. From 1993 to 2004 he worked as a regular correspondent entertaining millions on CBS News Sunday Morning.
This event is sponsored by Orono Commons Rehabilitation Nursing Facility and all proceeds go to the 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer's.

Maine Alzheimer's Champions Breakfast will Honor Senator Craven 
The Champions Breakfast
celebrates
individuals whose outstanding work or activity benefits those living with dementia here in Maine. The event highlights an aspect of Alzheimer's care and honors thefamilies who are effected.
The 4th annual Champions Breakast will honor Senator Margaret Craven who introduced the legislation to create the Maine State Plan on Alzhiemer's Disease. Her vision is to ensure that all families have access to information and resources for proper dementia care and support.

2012 Advocacy Forum April 23 - 25 Washington, DC

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will be the featured Advocacy Forum luncheon speaker. This marks the second consecutive year that attendees will hear directly from a top administration official on the progress of the National Alzheimer's Plan. In addition, leading political commentator and pollster Frank Luntz will be our keynote speaker. An Alzheimer's advocate for many years, Dr. Luntz will provide stimulating and timely insights on how to persuasively make our case for action on Capitol Hill. This is a meeting that Alzheimer's advocates should not miss.

Art Exhibit Created with Alzheimer's
The planning of a special exhibit is underway. The exhibit will feature works created by Maine artists with Alzheimer's or a related dementia. The theme of the event is to raise awareness of the disease and demonstrate that life is full of color with Alzheimer's. The exhibit is open to several mediums including oil painting, watercolor, drawing, sculpture, quilting, photography, paper, texitiles and new media. You do not need to be a professional artist to participate. Submissions from all levels and abilities are welcomed and encouraged.

Crop to Remember Yields A Hearty Harvest

Rebecca Kelly and Gertrude Sweetland of Yarmouth put their creative talents to generous use.
Their 2012 Crop to Remember event raised over $2,000 for the Maine Chapter and included more than 50 participants. In addition, 60 donated raffle items yielded a bumper crop of $1,435 for programs and services of those affected by Alzheimer's and dementia in Maine. Thank you to all!
