Dear , Our FIDF is on the move! We are seeing a huge jump in the presence, involvement, and fundraising of our chapter, and we are only just beginning. We had an important board meeting with our newly formed group of FIDF enthusiasts, and there was great energy and excitement in the room. We got through about a quarter of our agenda, as there were just so many wonderful things and ideas to talk about. But most importantly, the board members bonded and felt a good energy among us.
Our National Chairman Major General (Res.) Yitzhak (Jerry) Gershon joined us and spent several days with us to visit, work, and plan. His presence, along with Richard Mahan, Western Region's Deputy Director, was a great inspiration. Their visit culminated with an incredible induction ceremony for the young men and women who are leaving their homes in the United States and going to serve in the IDF.
Board vice-president Francine Gani held a magnificent affair that filled us all with a profound recognition for the efforts of the soldiers, who are, of course, what the FIDF is all about.
Finally, we are focused on three big things: missions to Israel, building our board, and working toward a Spring 2011 gala to raise money, attract new members, and to increase awareness of the soldiers and how we are there to support their brave efforts. FIDF Young Leadership Division
It has been an action packed kick-off season for Friends of the IDF, Young Leadership! With well over 300 people in attendance at the May 22nd Kick Off party at EastSide West in San Francisco, it was an overwhelming response to the organization as well as to the event planners. The kick-off was successful and introduced the FIDF Young Leadership's presence to the Bay Area.
Since the May 22nd event, the FIDF-YL had a Poker Around the Bay event on June 27th where 3 different locations representing different parts of the Bay Area housed simultaneous groups of like-minded individuals who spent the afternoon playing poker with all
proceeds benefiting the FIDF programs. With over 40 people in attendance, the event was a success! The top winners for each location: Keith Brown, Mark Schulman, Ron Shmargad, Adiv Spiegel, Adam Sapir and Elan Maier. The FIDF-YL thanks each participant for making it a full house!
On July 14th, the FIDF YL group met to discuss and plan events for the rest of the year. Our next planning meeting is scheduled for August 3. It is not too late to become a part of this group; please contact Chagit Shmargad for information as to how to get involved. In the works, as we read this is FIDF YL's Backyard Barbecue featuring some of Israel's Finest scheduled for August 22nd. We hope you can make it!

FIDF at Israel in the Gardens
As reported in the J Weekly, the FIDF was a favorite at the Israel in The Gardens Celebration, the largest Jewish event in the Bay Area, that brings together 20,000 people to the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco to celebrate Israel's Independence Day.
"Magali Cohen, a 26-year-old who volunteers with the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of Friends of the IDF, roamed the grounds with a camera operator, taping people's messages of support for Israeli soldiers - which will be forwarded to the troops
Summing up the viewpoints of those she was interviewing, Cohen said, "People are very impassioned and vehemently pro-Israel. I expected people to be a little more reserved."
She added: "I've been coming to Israel in the Gardens for 10 years and there's a unified vibrancy in the [Bay Area] Jewish community toward the IDF."
