Friend,

Chapter activity has been intense.  In brief, here is what the chapter has been up to for the past few weeks.

We have formed a board of directors; it will conduct its first board meeting June 2. The board currently consists of 12 members representing the primary regional areas served by the Chapter (San Francisco, East Bay, Marin, Peninsula, and South Bay).  A chairman, president, and vice president have been designated, and the board has received official approval from the National Board.

On April 19, the FIDF SF Bay Area chapter led for the first time the Yom Hazikaron (Israel's Memorial Day) commemoration. More than 1400 people attended the ceremony, which was held at the Flint Center in Cupertino.  This was also the first time when non-Israelis were included in the ceremony, which was conducted in Hebrew and translated into English.  This event was enthusiastically received by the community and gave the FIDF very positive visibility.

We also participated in the Bay Area Yom Ha'Atzmout fairs and events.  We attended fairs in Sacramento, Palo Alto, and Los Gatos.  Many people visited our booth and inquired about the organization picked up pledge cards, and purchased promotional items such as hats, t-shirts, pins, etc.

Next, the Chapter will be attending the Israel in the Gardens event on June 6.

In the midst of such a flurry of activity, we moved our office to Palo Alto, right across from the JCC.  Though we are still unpacking, the new home already feels like an official FIDF headquarters.  The Israeli flag, photos of soldiers, and colorful displays of FIDF t-shirts and hats make clear our Chapter's mission. We have a wonderful new volunteer, Lina Venford , who will be helping us organize the office and perform clerical tasks, as well as a new Administrative Assistant, Sharon Laufman.

Wornick Jewish Day School 7th graders award
the largest check  to the FIDF

Seventh-graders at Wornick Jewish Day School in Foster City work all year on their philanthropic Mitzvah project.  Each student selects a charitable organization, researches and writes about it, and shares the information with classmates.  At the conclusion of the project, the entire class decide how the funds they raised will be allocated; they select one organization to receive 10% of all money raised which is the largest gift awarded.   This year, after the IDF gifted musicians performed for the middle school on May 22, the class selected the FIDF to be the recipient of the top award.   The FIDF was not even a contender for the award, but after the young soldiers performed at the school, the students unanimously decided to make the FIDF their top grantee organization.

"I specifically chose to contribute because when the soldiers came to our school and explained what its like in the Israeli army I knew I wanted to do my part in helping them protect Israel," said Sophie Rubin.
As Sarah Downing, another seventh-grader explained, "I decided to donate to Friends of the IDF because I feel connected to Israel, and if it wasn't for them, Israel might not even be a state."

The class decided to allocate the funds to the Flights for Lone Soldiers Program.

Dear Friends ,

I had the great opportunity as a soldier to serve for two years with people who do for the soldiers. It's a real challenging mission to build a chapter in a large community that is so spread out,  with lots of  other organizations in it.  Now the FIDF is a reality in the Bay Area and its reach extends from Sacramento to Carmel .

With people like you who believe in the mission to support each soldier who defends the Jewish home land, we will have strong Israel forever.

I'm going back to Israel with my family, but I leave in the Bay Area  a big supportive family.

I would like to wish Sarita a great success . I'm sure she will do best with your support.

Thank you all for a great time we had together on our meetings, and events. Thank you all who advised, helped and supported me.

You are always welcomed to visit us in Israel , anytime .
Good luck to all of you and keep in touch !

 Sincerely,
Amit Tesler
