Welcome to Medina City Schools

Greetings!

Welcome to the Medina City Schools e-newsletter, the Bee's Buzz Broadcast. This publication will be sent out semimonthly sharing highlights, news and important dates.

Many thanks to our sponsors of the e-newsletter.

Additional cuts looming with levy failure

The Medina City Schools recent levy failure will mean addtiional cuts to the budget.  The 5.9 mill emergency levy would have generated approximately $7 million annually for the five years of the levy period.  Prior to this issue being on the ballot the district cut $9.5 million from its budget and close to 150 staff members.  With the looming budget deficit from the levy failure the district will need to cut approximately another $3.9 million from its budget.

At this time no decisions have been made regarding reductions to current programs and offerings.  The Board of Education and administration will be discussing next steps in the coming weeks and months.  A district priority is to preserve as many educational opportunities as possible for students.  A levy passage would have meant a reduction in pay-to-participate fees and reinstatement of busing services to prior service levels.

Superintendent Randy Stepp stated "Many rumors are circulating regarding the next set of cuts that will be made in the district due to the levy failure.  We want our parents, staff and students to know that we have not made any decisions at this time.  As we continue to talk about necessary steps and when decisions are made we will communicate this information to our community.  This is not an easy process, therefore we do not want to rush to any conclusions or make any hasty decisions."

District secures funding for anti-bullying program - Rachel's Challenge

Rachel's Challenge is an anti-bullying program inspired and developed by Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999.  Mr. Scott founded the program in 2000.  Rachel's acts of kindness and compassion, coupled with the contents of her diaries, serve as the foundation for Rachel's Challenge.

The mission of this program is to inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion.  Rachel's Challenge objective is for schools to:

  • Create a safe learning environment for all students by re-establishing civility and delivering proactive antidotes to school violence and bullying.
  • Improve academic achievement by engaging students' hearts, heads and hands in the learning process.
  • Provide students with social/emotional education that is both colorblind and culturally relevant.
  • Train adults to inspire, equip and empower students to effect permanent positive change.

On November 15, Mr. Scott will be conducting a one-hour presentation at both Root and Claggett Middle Schools and on November 16 at Medina High School.  The evening of November 16, Mr. Scott will make a presentation to the entire Medina City Schools community.  This presentation will be at Medina High School in the Main Stage Auditorium from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.  This presentation is free of charge.

Both middle schools and the high school will be using a one-year curriculum guide through Rachel's Challenge promoting a positive culture, heightening awareness and sensitivity to others, and providing continuous character lessons and education.

Funding for this program was secured from a number of sources including:  a Martha Holden Jennings Foundation grant, Claggett PTO, Medina City Schools Foundation, Root PTO, Northrop Elementary, Heritage Elementary, Josten's and an anonymous donor.
