Musical Bees take Top Honors

The Medina Musical Bees were awarded Top Honors September 18 at the 2010 "Music in Motion" Marching Band competition held in Louisville, Ohio.

The 207 member Musical Bees Marching Band was led by Field Commanders Jenna Azotea, Megan Scribner, Kate Bartolotta and Meghan Millsop performing an original marching band composition by Gary Gilroy titled "Spartacus."

Awards received by the Bees at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) sanctioned competition included:  Best Percussion Class AA, Best Auxiliary Class AA, Best Visual Performance Class AA, Best General Effect Class AA and First Place in Class AA.  Overall awards included:  Best Visual Performance of Show, Best General Effect of Show and Best Percussion of Show.

The Musical Bees finished with the overall highest score of the competition.  That accomplishment marked the 6th consecutive time, dating back to October of 2008, that Medina has won an OMEA local competition.  The Bees also qualified for the OMEA State Marching Band Finals, which will take place in Columbus.

"I am extremely proud of our marching band students this year.  We have been blessed here at Medina High School with a wonderful history and tradition of excellence and with this season's first competitive performance at Louisville, this year's band has certainly embraced and upheld that great tradition," stated marching band director, Gary Ciulla.

Frequently Asked Questions about district's 5.9 mill emergency levy

With the upcoming 5.9 mill emergency levy on the November 2 ballot there are questions that we are frequently asked.  We will be addressing those questions in the upcoming issues of this e-newsletter.

Why does the school district need more money?

  • The school district has received only two new operating levies since 1994, even though enrollment has increased by nearly 2,000 students during that same period.
  • Funding for Ohio's public schools comes primarily from local property taxes and state income taxes.  The amount of each district's funding that comes from the state is based on a formula that evaluates each district's property valuation.  Low wealth districts receive more state funding than high wealth districts.  Medina is considered a high wealth district by the state.
  • The school district has received 2% less funding from the state this year than last year. The number of costly state and federal unfunded mandates has increased and continues to increase.
What will the passage of the levy do for the district?
  • Prevent layoffs of an additional 50-70 quality teachers
  • Maintain class sizes at current levels
  • Reduce pay-to-participate fees by 50% for performing arts, athletics, and clubs
  • Reinstate busing services to previous levels (currently at state minimums)
  • Retain current academic programs and electives
  • Prevent layoffs of valuable support staff and administrators
