District's student ACT scores continue to climb
ACT scores have continued to climb over the past five years for district students surpassing the state averages in all areas.  Medina students' average ACT scores for English are 22.6 ; Mathematics 24.0; Reading 24.2; Science 23.2.  The composite score for Medina students is 23.6 and for the state it is 21.8.

Superintendent Randy Stepp stated "We are very pleased with continued rise in our students' ACT scores.  These scores serve as good indicators of a student's college or work preparedness and the level of learning that is taking place within the school district."
District's garden program continues to grow
The Medina City School District's - Community Garden program is now in its second year.  The district's Wellness Committee has set a goal of establishing a community garden at evey school building within five years.  School and community gardens teach and enhance environmental attitudes, social skills, self-confidence, leadership skills, nutritional attitudes and scholastic achievement.

Currently, there are gardens located at Medina High School and A.I. Root Middle School.  Garden volunteers include students, parents, school district staff, and community members.  The garden program leadership team continues to work towards incorporating the gardens into the school curriculum.  In early spring, the high school environmental science students started 27 varieties of plants for the gardens.

Student council members and community volunteers have watered and tended to the gardens throughout the summer.  Weekly donations of produce have been donated to a Medina food pantry.  Recently, potatoes from the gardens were sold at the Medina Farmer's Market.

All supplies, seeds, and materials for the gardens have been donated with no cost to the school district.  The garden program is in need of volunteers, garden tools, compost, soil, plants, seeds, and creative ideas.  If you are interested in helping, please email grigsby@zoominternet.net and indicate your area of interest.

Important information about the November 2 Emergency Levy
With a levy passage on November 2 the school district can:
  • Prevent layoffs of an additional 50-70 quality teachers
  • Maintain class sizes at same size
  • Reduce pay-to-participate fees 50% (performing arts, athletics, and clubs)
  • Reinstate transportation services to previous levels
  • Keep current academic programs and electives

Even if the levy passes, the district cannot bring back all the cuts that were made during the 2009-2010 school year.
