Class of 2010 earns over $5 million in scholarships
The Medina High School Class of 2010 earned over $5 million in scholarships from colleges and universities and $125,000 from private and local scholarships. On June 6, 553 seniors received their diplomas from the Medina City Schools at their graduation ceremony held at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron.
Marissa Hartman received an $8,000 National Merit Finalist Scholarship. The following are this year's National Merit Commended students: Alec Biehl, Alexandra Bonner, Vincent Cullen, Tyler Dasch, Kari Rea, Joshua Schwarz, Colleen Taylor, and Olivia Wetta.
Of the graduating seniors 134 received Gold Tassels. To earn a gold tassel students had to earn an Honors Diploma per the standards set forth by the Ohio Department of Education. |
Medina City Teachers Association Agrees to Financial Concessions - Totaling Nearly $1,000,000.00 The Medina City Teachers Association (MCTA) membership voted on concessions totaling nearly $1 million. The membership agreed to a 1% decrease in base salary raise for the 2010-2011 school year and to contribute dollars equivalent to 15% of their monthly health insurance premium. "We are very pleased with the outcome of MCTA's membership to support concessions. The district is composed of a partnership between the community and our staff. It is important that we continue to work together to address the district's financial situation. We still have a looming budget deficit that we need to address and we will need the support of our staff and the community to continue to make Medina an excellent school district," stated Mark Dolan Board of Education President. |
District honors staff members and volunteers
At the district's annual Closing Day Ceremony for staff, a number of teachers and support staff members were honored for their exemplary service along with four volunteers who received the district's "outstanding volunteer" award.
Honored volunteers were Lisa Jackson, Andrea Lyons, Karla Robinson and Bill Roser.
District retirees numbering 36 were also honored for their years of service to the school district.

Jacqui Leonhardt wins 2010 KIA
For the fourth consecutive year, Bill Doraty has generously given a KIA to reward a senior at Medina High School for their academics, attendance, good citizenship and service. At the May 28 Senior Farewell Assemble, Bill Doraty drew the names of 10 seniors who met the criteria listed above. This year's lucky winner was Jacqui Leonhardt. Nine students received $100 gas cards. |
