Community Coffee - April 27

The district is continuing efforts to address questions in regard to the various changes occurring in the school district at a number of Community Coffees.  We hope that you can join us on Tuesday, April 27, at Medina High School from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The evening will begin with a brief general session in the high school's Middle Stage Auditorium.  Attendees will then have the opportunity to choose two break-out sessions to participate in.

"Addressing Opportunities & Options for Students at the High School"

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the course offerings available to students in the 2010-11 school year; how students will be selected for courses; the various options available to students through Post-Secondary and Flex Credit.

Facilitator: Principal Bryan Farson

"Meeting Students' Needs - Intervention in the Classroom"

This session will provide insight to the intervention that occurs in the classroom on a daily basis through differentiation and a resource called RTI.  Attendees will gain an understanding of how classroom teachers address the learning needs of all students.

Facilitator: Garfield Elementary School Principal Karen McGinty

"Setting the Stage for Advocacy"

Attendees will get a glimpse at lobbying and advocacy efforts including topic areas such as why we need to get involved, where to start, and advocacy in action.  This will be the first in a three part series. The second session will cover relationship building including how to start a network and tips and tools, and the third session will involve a 'hands on' role play of skill building, testifying, and meeting with legislators

Facilitator: Ohio School Boards Association Legislative Specialist Jennifer Economus

"Athletic Opportunities for District Students"

This session will review the athletic opportunities available to students and will address questions such as understanding pay-to-participate, transportation of athletes to contests, and eligibility.

Medina High School Hosting Mock Car Crash

Medina High School is hosting Medina's Prom Promise Mock Car Crash, Tuesday, April 27, 9:00 a.m. at Ken Dukes Stadium (located on the high school campus).  The rain date is Thursday, April 27 at9:00 a.m.

This event is a collaborative effort with the Medina City Fire Department, Medina Life Support Team, Medina Police Department, Medina Hospital, and Cleveland Metro Life Flight.  The Mock Car Crash illustrates to students the importance of safe, alcohol and drug free driving and is being stressed at this time of year as prom approaches.

The 5 D's of Driving will be this year's focus which includes:  driving drunk, drugged, drowsy, distracted and dumb. The scenario for the mock crash is driving while texting.

Medina High School Prom is on Saturday, May 15. Cleveland Metro Flight, Flight Nurse Specialist, Deanna Harris stated, "The Metro Life Flight team has witnessed many horrific consequences resulting from teens involved in motor vehicle crashes. That's why it is important for Metro Life Flight to be out in the community educating young drivers on the consequences of their actions behind the wheel. Safer teen drivers, means safer roads for all of us."

While eleventh and twelfth grade students are participating in the Mock Car Crash, ninth and tenth graders will be in an assembly with Dr. David Levine an emergency room physician at Medina General Hospital and Officer Don Searle a School Resource Officer with the Medina City Police Department.  Levine and Searle will be discussing the consequences of driving under the influence of the 5 D's.

Throughout the week students will be listening to messages from members of Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) about the importance of safe, alcohol and drug free driving.
