Code Review Process Update

Results of the vote on proposed changes to the EICC Code of Conduct were distributed to primary contacts on January 11.  The deadline to file objections was January 27.  A ballot was provided to all Full Members who participated in the original vote.  Re-votes must be submitted by 5 PM EST on Feb. 13, 2012.

Re-Vote Process

1. Limited Scope: Qualified objections will result in a new "yes/no" ballot to reconsider the specific proposal (i.e., no new proposals or modifications can be accepted.)

2. Adoption of Objections: A 2/3 majority of ballots cast is required to overturn a prior vote.

Updated Code Review Timeline

  • Feb. 13: Deadline to submit re-vote ballots.
  • Feb. 15: Re-vote results communicated to members.

Membership Compliance Program: Proposed Changes for Ratification

The following changes have been proposed to improve the EICC Membership Compliance Program:

  • Reporting: Report twice per year instead of quarterly.  A progress-only report would be due in July, and a final report would be due in January of each year.  This approach is intended to align with common company practices.  It also is intended to help members focus more on execution and capability building in their internal processes.
  • Audits: Reduce number of audits on high-risk member facilitates from 50% to 25%.
  • Audit Type: Audits accepted to meet annual audit requirements include the Validated Audit Process (EICC-VAP), EICC Auditee Managed Audit (EICC-AMA), and EICC Customer Managed Audit (EICC-CMA).  This approach is intended to allow better alignment with advancements under the VAP, enables members to rely on standard audits, and results in consistent outcomes that can be shared.

Supporting documents are available in Sharepoint, including:

  • Proposed Changes: "2012 Compliance Program Proposed Changes"
  • Redline: "Membership Compliance Program Proposed Changes Redlined" and "2012 MCP Changed Document" (shows redline changes accepted)
  • "VAP Audit Definitions"
  • "2010 Ratified Membership Compliance Program"

Health & Safety Training:

Two Sessions Available in 2012

EICC and GeSI will sponsor two training sessions in 2012 presented by Underwriters Laboratories Specialized Technology Resources (UL STR).  One session will be held in Shenzhen and presented in Mandarin. EICC members may help determine the location for the second session by clicking here

The L&CB work group seeks member companies or suppliers to host the 6-hour sessions in Q2 and Q3 of 2012.  Host companies may send two personnel to the training session at no charge.  There will be a nominal fee for attendance by those not associated with a host company.  The training has been translated into Mandarin and Spanish, which allows it to be provided in multiple regions.  Contact Jannie Bailey to host a session.

Worker-Management Communication Training

The Worker Management Communication Training course is almost ready for release to EICC and GeSI members and their suppliers.  The "train the trainer" course will help member companies and their suppliers implement effective worker-management communication systems.  It also will raise worker awareness of their rights and responsibilities.

EICC and GeSI will sponsor three training sessions in 2012 presented by INFACT.  The LCB Work Group hopes to hold two Mandarin sessions in China (Shanghai and Shenzhen) and one in an English speaking country in Southeast Asia.  The work group seeks member companies or suppliers to host a 2-½ day session in Q2, Q3, or Q4 this year.  Host companies may send two personnel to the training session at no charge.  There will be a nominal fee for attendance by those not associated with a host company.

Contact Jannie Bailey if you or one of your suppliers can host a session in 2012, or for more information.  Contact INFACT Global Partners if your company is interested in using the training internally or with your suppliers.

Governance Task Force Update

A Governance Task Force was formed in July 2011 to guide the governance review process.  The process is intended to support the EICC mission and strategies, including to accommodate growth and expand engagement across the global supply chain.  BSR has been retained as an independent third party to guide the process and provide recommendations.  The task force will keep EICC members informed through the following:

  • Weekly Bulletin: Weekly updates and access to the Governance Review Process document that outlines the process.
  • Email: BSR will send emails about the process and opportunities for member input.
  • Membership Meeting: BSR will present the Governance Review Process and information about a membership survey at the Winter Membership Meeting.
  • Webinars: BSR will host two webinars (one for Europe/East Coast and one for Asia/West Coast).

Roundtable with makeITFair and Good Electronics: May 9-10

In 2009, EICC members participated in a roundtable discussion on supply chain issues by makeITfair and the GoodElectronics Network. The groups will host a follow-up session May 9-10 in Amsterdam.

The objective of the session is to find common ground between the electronics industry and civil society organizations on strategies to improve labor conditions in the global electronics supply chain.  Social and environmental responsibility (SER) policies will also be discussed, as well as practices and recent initiatives by the industry.

Participation is available to interested companies, including suppliers, civil society organizations, and EU policy makers.  Space is limited, so register by March 30.  Contact Pauline Overeem at GoodElectronics for a program, registration form, and additional information.  Contact Wendy Dittmer for information about participation by the EICC.

EICC-ON

The Tools Management Work Group will complete release the revised Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) in mid-February after testing updates in EICC-ON.  The updates will address feedback from members, streamline the SAQ, correct errors in scoring, and add questions in response to new regulatory requirements in 2012.  The SAQ import/export functionality will also be restored in EICC-ON when the updates are released.

Members who have already begun the SAQ will see most of their data retained after the update.  The answer choices for some questions have been modified, and members will need to respond to these questions again.  Most existing data will pre-populate the first time members access the questionnaire after the update.
