EICC Participates in State Department Meeting on "Conflict" Minerals
EICC participated in a State Department meeting on May 14 to discuss the challenge of "conflict" minerals in industry supply chains. The meeting included participation by the auto, jewelry, and other manufacturing industries, and focused on steps industries can take to keep conflict minerals out of supply chains.
The State Department issued a statement after the meeting that included the following comments from EICC: "Together, the EICC and GeSI will continue to develop a systematic approach to keep our supply chains free of conflict minerals and support legitimate sourcing from the DRC. We were encouraged to learn about diplomatic efforts to address the conflict minerals issue." See the full statement here.
The U.S. Senate this week voted to include conflict minerals legislation in the Financial Services Reform Bill. The legislation adopts provisions by Senators Brownback (R-KS) and Durbin (D-IL) that require U.S. companies to certify that they do not use conflict minerals in their products. The Financial Services Reform bill must still be passed by the House and Senate.
