  2. Prepare for the audit selection Process by having your companies specific auditee list ready by May 15, 2009.
  3. Review the EICC non-disclosure agreement and the EICC Audit Purchase Base Agreement, and sign and return by May 21, 2009 to Phylmar@eicc.info.

Supply Chain Mapping Project

The Extractives Work Group in conjunction with the GeSI Supply Chain Work Group has contracted with Resolve (consultant) to perform supply chain mapping of tin, tantalum, and cobalt based on the recommendation of the 2008 joint EICC/GeSI study. The scope of work is:

  1. Create a transparency model to identify companies in the electronic supply chain.
  2. Determine whether identified companies have a social responsibility code of conduct.
  3. Identify challenges incurred in collecting this information.
  4. Provide guidance on a systemic process to maintain the transparency model.
EICC member companies (with paid-in-full 2009 dues) are eligible to participate in this activity at no additional cost.

Please complete the supplier template, found HERE, and return it to Grant Feichtinger by Friday, May 15. EICC staff will consolidate this input and identify five suppliers associated with each of the three metals. The information will be used for modeling. Resolve will not have access to the company-supplier relationships identified in the harvesting activity, and no commercial relationships will be revealed.

For more information see EICC 2009 Extractives Goals_Final 04Feb2009 and 2009_Research_RFP_17Feb2009.

Please contact Grant Feichtinger with questions or concerns.

Congress Introduces Minerals Extraction Bill
U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) introduced legislation on April 23 that would require companies to report annually on their use of certain minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Congo Conflict Minerals Act (S. 891) will require companies that use columbite-tantalite, cassiterite, or wolframite to disclose annually to the SEC which country produced the minerals. If the minerals originate from the DRC, companies will have to further disclose the exact mines from which the minerals are extracted.

Industry representatives have met with Senate staff about the legislation.  Some provisions of the bill were removed before the bill was introduced, including a certification requirement to prove that conflict minerals are not used, and a requirement for annual independent audits. Talking points on the legislation were drafted by EICC staff and are available here.

No action is currently scheduled on the bill, and EICC will keep members informed of its progress.  Please contact Brad Cameron at EICC for more information.
