What is a Safe Surgical Checklist?

At the start of 2012, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented a requirement that ASC's begin using some type of safe surgical checklist in the operating room. The intent is to minimize the occurrence of miscommunications which can potentially affect patient safety. Beginning October 1, 2012, ASC's will be required to demonstrate that they are using such a list in order to avoid penalties and Medicare/Medicaid payment deductions.

While no specific list was mandated and often times the standard checklist encompasses a number of steps which are not relevant in the ophthalmic O.R., ASORN, together with OMIC, ASCRS, and OOSS, has created an Ophthalmic-Specific Checklist that they have allowed us to share with you.
