Infection Control in Ambulatory Surgery - Focusing on Surveillance for Surgical Site Infections (SSIs)

In January of 2009, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released an action plan to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The plan started out with Phase 1, which focused on six high-priority, HAI-related areas within the acute care settings. After initiating Phase 1 for acute care, HHS recognized and acknowledged the need for HAI prevention across the continuum and included outpatient settings in the plans. Ambulatory surgery, together with end-stage renal dialysis, was selected for Phase 2. Various experts in the field convened to discuss and summarize key actions for HAI prevention issues, specific to Phase 2 related facilities.

A Crash Course on Diamond Knives

Diamond knives have revolutionized the way ophthalmic surgeons perform cataract surgery, providing significant advantages over conventional stainless steel blades. The edge of a diamond knife blade provides the sharpest, most precise cut available, resulting in a cleaner, faster healing incision. In spite of the surgical advantages of using diamond knives, there are many things to consider when purchasing these instruments including size, type, specs, cost, care and handling, sterilization, repair or replacement.

For over 15 years Ambler Surgical has been one of the leading diamond knife suppliers, maintaining strong relationships with the top manufacturers. The company has addressed virtually every question or concern on the use, care, cleaning, handling and repair of  diamond knives, making it an expert on everything about this delicate instrument. To help provide insight and share its knowledge gained over the years, Ambler Surgical has provided the following educational resources on diamond knives:

Ambler Surgical Explores Opportunity to Partner with JCAHPO
After recognizing an emergence of online continued education (CE) courses on current ophthalmic surgery topics, Ambler Surgical began to investigate ways to help ophthalmic surgery personnel stay on top of their ongoing CE that is required for certification in their desired areas of study.  In March, Ambler and the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) began exploring the possibility of joining forces to provide a variety of CE opportunities to the ophthalmic community.

Stay tuned for upcoming JCAHPO CE credit opportunities sponsored by Ambler Surgical. For more information, email media@amblersurgical.com.
