Several years ago Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome, commonly referred to as TASS, came to the forefront as the ophthalmic caregiver's surgical nightmare. TASS has been described as "an acute postoperative inflammatory reaction in which a noninfectious substance enters the anterior segment and induces toxic damage to the intraocular tissues."

 

There is an increasing demand on the ophthalmic caregiver to turn cases over faster and improve their productivity. However, there may be unwanted problems associated with the increase in speed that can lead to a negative patient outcome.

The surgical instrument industry has experienced many changes in the last five years including greater instrument specialization; tighter regulations around instrument reprocessing, infection control and patient safety, improved ability to process orders online and a focus on more customer-centric business practices. This transformation has resulted in a proliferation of new information and standards - all directly related to the bottom line: finding quality surgical instruments at the lowest possible pricing.
