It has been a busy few months for Why Waste -organising Eco-Fair with BBEF and Green Business Network in April and dealing with increasing numbers of waste offers and requests.
This edition features office furniture and what to do with it when it is no longer needed.
One side effect of government cuts has been the rise in the disposal of office furniture particularly from the public sector in the wake of redundancies and restructuring. Why Waste has seen a significant rise in the offers of office furniture on the exchange. Most of which has been successfully re homed as a result, either with community organisations or proffessional office furniture reuse companies such as Over2hills.
A staggering 165,000 tonnes of office furniture is thrown away per year by Britsh businesses according to the Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse. It is estimated that over 50% of office furniture disposed of is reusable.

Government Review of Waste Policy - Zero Waste Ambition or just Zero Ambition ?
Last week the Government announced the outcome of its much awaited Review of Waste Policy in England 2011 to a lukewarm response. Criticisms include:
- A general lack of ambition
- A lack of any long term recycling targets - The review simply proposes to meet the EU target of 50% recycling by 2020
- A lack of concrete policies and effective action, particularly to address food waste.
On the plus side the review puts a strong emphasis on commercial and industrial waste. Measures proposed include:
- The development of a 'Business Waste and Recycling Collection Commitment' aimed at local authorities
- Work to encourage the take up of initiatives such as pilot trade waste "bring banks"
- Further work on voluntary responsibility deals in the following sectors - The hospitality sector (concentrating on food and packaging waste), The paper industry, Direct mail, Textiles (furthering work on the Sustainable Clothing Roadmap), Construction waste and Packaging
- Consultation on introducing a landfill restriction on wood waste and review of landfill bans for other materials, such as metals, textiles and all biodegradable waste.
The Review also outlines the role that businesses will have in its work on waste prevention and reuse.
Eco Fair - Great Success!

Eco-Fair was a huge success in April. It attracted over 370 people on the day and received excellent feedback from stall holders and delegates. A big thank you goes to all those who participated including delegates, stallholders and, of course, our event sponsors CO2 Sense, Associated Waste Management and Thorite.
96% of delegates returning feedback forms rated the speaker programme as good or excellent and 95% of stallholders said that the event had resulted in new sales leads for them.
Fear not if you missed it ..... you can view the eco-fair presentations online here, and download the delegate booklet to find out more about the companies who exhibited.
Next year's event is already being planned and we are keen to hear from potential sponsors. If your company would like to be an event sponsor please get in touch. |

furniture reuse in action....

University and College join forces to reuse furniture
Bradford College has joined forces with the University of Bradford to maximize the reuse of furniture on both campuses. The aim of the project is to prevent as much of the redundant furniture as possible from both institutions going to landfill. This has the additional advantage of saving significant amounts of money in new furniture costs.
The Second Hand Furniture Store is hosted by the College with the University providing the IT system. The joint collaboration between the two forward thinking institutions will offer students and staff the opportunity to browse the EcoVersity website for office furniture that would otherwise be disposed of.
In its first 4 months the store has reused 369 items of furniture weighing 6 Tonnes and with a replacement value of £23,000. The store currently only offers furniture for internal use free of charge but there is the option for other organisations to purchase furniture.

is your office furniture over the hill ?
Over2Hills is based in West Yorkshire and provides an office furniture reuse/recycling service throughout the UK. This remarkable company has turned office furniture recycling into an art form. Redundant office furniture is collected from clients and taken to their large site at Cleckheaton where it is sorted to for reuse and recycling. Some furniture is sold for reuse and some is given away to charitable organisations.
Furniture not fit for reuse is remanufactured or recycled - for example new desks are constructed from suitable components. The company also manufactures a 100% recycled bed using furniture componants. Wood which cannot be used is either chipped and made into their own mulch product - Little Erics Earth Tonic or used on site to generate energy in their own biomass boiler.

Why Waste Case Study
Balfour Beatty Workplace Ltd
Over Christmas 2010 Balfour Beatty Workplace decommissioned an office in Scunthorpe and wanted to find an alternative to landfill for office furniture which was no longer needed. Why Waste helped to register the items with www.whywaste.org.uk and supported them to make contact with local community groups via voluntary sector networks. The furniture including desks, conference tables, filing cabinets, receptions desks and chairs was all donated to local community groups as a result. A total of five community organisations benefitted and Balfour Beatty Workplace made savings of approximately £5000 as a result.
Winterton Council "The furniture is very much appreciated and saved a lot of money that we simply haven't got"
