We have gas!

GWE Biogas Ltd are very pleased with progress in the commissioning of their state of the art Biogas plant at Driffield, East Yorkshire.  The site has been taking in both packaged and clean waste streams for several weeks and the digesters are already producing significant volumes of a good quality biogas.

The company's first 1MW generator is due to come on line in the new year  and will start supplying the grid with power for almost 1,000 homes.  GWE then expect to install a second 1MW of generation in April, making the Sandhill plant one of the largest specialised biogas plants in the country.

Mathew Girking, Director, commented

"We are delighted with the initial results of how the plant is working.  Our depackaging equipment has completed its first week of trials and commissioning and it is proving that it is more that capable of dealing with the very varied packaging that food waste comes in."

For further information on how GWE can help convert your food waste into energy contact Pip Snaith on 01377 229425 or visit  www.gwebiogas.co.uk

The season of festivity and good cheer is here but spare a thought for the waste line. Read on to find out about new developments to help your business cut down on waste including a new package of free consultancy and grants from CO2 Sense Yorkshire.

This edition features commercial food waste - an untapped resource.  Food waste can make up on average 20% of business waste.  Whilst there are well established recovery routes for food waste during its manufacture, the standard option for mixed catering food waste is still regrettably landfill.  The good news is that commercial food waste collections are now available in the region. Restaurants, staff canteens, takeaways and other catering/food businesses are now able to participate in collections that will allow this waste to be used as a valuable resource either in the production of nutrient rich compost or biogas.

UK - Participants wanted for TV 'Reclaim' series

Tern TV are making a new 10 part series that aims to prove you can use reclaimed and salvaged goods to do up your house or home.

Tern TV are looking for people in Brighton, Manchester and the Central Belt of Scotland who have saved up their hard earned cash to have work done in their homes but found the quotes they have been getting are too high and beyond their budget.

Using reclaimed and salvaged goods the team tackle the budget to make sure you get far more for your money. They want people who are looking to renovate a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen but cannot quite afford it. Yorkshire textile companies collaborate on the development of an award winning recycled fabric.

Wools of New Zealand received a Sustainability Award last month for their involvement in the development of "WoJo", an innovative interior textile using jute recovered from Starbucks coffee sacks.

The presentation was made on behalf of the Campaign for Wool 2010, and recognised WNZ's contribution in blending their Laneve sustainable wools with the jute fibres to form the new upholstery fabric. This will be used in 8000 Starbucks stores, and is manufactured by Camira Ltd from Mirfield.

The development team also called upon the expertise of Yorkshire nonwoven felt manufacturer and recycler Edward Clay & Son Limited on the project

Too Good To Waste - new report on food waste from restaurants

The UK's Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) has just released its Too Good to Waste Report, a pilot study on where food waste in restaurants is coming from and what can be done to reduce its environmental impact.

The report provides some really useful guidance for restaurants to include as part of their CSR activities. It also shows how much could be saved in terms of food waste and money as a result.

New Commercial Food Waste Collections available

CO2 Sense Yorkshire is supporting the expansion of commercial food waste collections in the region by working with 4 waste management companies.   Funding from CO2 Sense has enabled these companies to purchase new collection vehicles, new food waste containers and invest in service promotion.  As a result these companies are now able to offer weekly collections of Category 3 catering waste from hospitality businesses or businesses/organisations with catering operations in Hull, York or West Yorkshire.

The food waste is being converted into compost at organic processing facilities in the region bringing about clear environmental benefits. Every tonne of food waste diverted from landfill into composting brings a saving of 223 Kg of carbon dioxide equivalent.  That equates to the emissions from 1880 km or 5 weeks travel in an average car.

The services are easy to use, comply with legislation and are the environmentally responsible option for food waste.

Widening the reach of commercial food waste collections - Report Available

Commercial food waste collection services have enormous growth potential as organic waste treatment technology continues to develop in the region.  In 2009 BEAT undertook a 9 month initiative which looked at the key issues for the growth of these services.  Amongst other things the report concluded that businesses were receptive, but services need to be cost effective and easy to use. A key issue identified is the widespread use of macerators commonly used to dispose of food waste to sewer.

The report is now available to download from the

CO2 Sense Food and Drink network.
