Diverting Food Waste from Landfill for Profit
14th July 2010 17:00
With landfill costs rising, and more alternatives becoming available for treatment of organic wastes, there is growing interest from food businesses in recycling their food waste. This early evening seminar focuses on the collection of food waste, bringing together food businesses, organic waste processors, and waste collection companies to find out about case studies of successful collections, and learn about what makes for a successful collection service. Welcome to the Summer newsletter of....
the Free, online Waste Exchange for businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber
This edition features the most commonly registered waste type on Why Waste..... Wood Waste.
The demand for wood waste as fuel has seen a dramatic increase over recent months but is this outlet for your wood waste the most sustainable and does it actively discourage reuse and recycling? |

Wood recycling "at risk" from large-scale biomass
Large-scale biomass plants being paid a renewable energy subsidy to burn woodchips have pushed up woodchip prices by more than 30% in the last four years and are putting wood recycling at risk, according to the Wood Panel Industries Federation (WPIF).

exploring options for wood waste.....
Wood waste options vary according to the quantity, type of wood, levels of contamination. Typical wood waste types include mdf, melamine faced chipboard, chipboard, mixed wood e.g. from a household waste site, treated wood, broken pallets. clean softwood or hardwood. Wood waste can be in the form of dust, shavings and solid offcuts.
Uses include: Fuel, animal bedding, mulch, compost/soil improvers, reuse as wood in community projects, panel board, cat litter.
Firstly register the waste with www.whywaste.org.uk. This will help to build a picture of wood waste supply in the region. By making information on wood waste widely available we can support innovation and help to facilitate reuse.
Common solutions include:
1. Utilising the wood waste on site as fuel and a source of sustainable heat. (Support and advice available from CO2 Sense Yorkshire)
2. Reusing wood on site e.g. pallets and offcuts.
3. Donating reusable pieces to community projects e.g. Kirkgate Community Studios and Bingley Grammer School have both benefitted from plywood offcuts from White Rose Cutting Forms in Bradford as a result of Why Waste.
4. Installation of a dedicated wood recycling container which is emptied by a wood waste specialist e.g Timberpack or a waste management company.
5. Broken pallets and crates are a common waste. These occupy a great deal of space in a skip. One solution for Why Waste member XL Joinery has been to install a waste compactor to reduce void space. This has halved the number of uplifts and made approximate savings of £4000 per year.

case study.....
The Wood Pellet Company is a new, Keighley based, business, which manufactures wood pellets and supplies biomass boilers.
During 2009 The Wood Pellet Company made contact with Why Waste to discuss their requirements for waste sawdust for pellet manufacture. Why Waste then helped the company to make contact with two other Why Waste members - shop fitting company R N Wooler and Co and timber specialists British Hardwood each producing suitable waste. This has resulted in a very satisfactory arrangement where all three companies have benefited.
Simon Thompson Buyer for R N Wooler explained that "Why Waste helped us make contact with the Wood Pellet Company and after the initial purchase of containers for waste saw dust, the arrangement will save the company in excess of £4,000 per year. We are as sustainable as possible in our operations and see this as another step in the right direction" click hereto read more Why Waste case studies |
