Yorkshire's First Business Waste Fair a resounding success
A big thank you to the 180 people attending the Why Waste & BBEF event held in Bradford in February, helping to make it such a success.
As well as the exhibition
of recycling services
and topical workshops, the
event saw 2 firsts. Leeds
City Council unveiled its
business waste guide and
Bradford College launched
its new business recycling
service.
Other highlights included the "wall of waste" exchange area and Agfa Graphic's Derek Jackson's no-nonsense approach to waste minimisation - one of the five workshops run on the day.
Following the excellent
feedback from the day
plans are underway
for another.
Please get in touch if
you would like to exhibit
or sponsor our next business
waste fair or if you
simply have a brilliant idea for making the next one even
better. |
Highway to improved
recycling
The community Recycling Network (CRN) have secured funding from the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to support businesses along the M62 corridor to minimise waste and improve their recycling rates.
Over a sixth of the population lives along the M62 corridor between Liverpool and Leeds. In the West Yorkshire section alone (Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield) there are approx. 70, 000 businesses. Many of these small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are currently not being provided with any kind of recycling service. CRN is aiming to help businesses reduce waste at source and find outlets for re-using and recycling materials within the community.
The one year initiative will help to co-ordinate a consortium of social enterprises to provide office paper, cans, plastic, glass and cardboard collections, as well as taking away surplus office furniture, carpets, WEEE, textiles, etc. It will provide a one stop shop for businesses wanting to engage with social enterprises to improve their waste performance.
Anthony Quinn Project Co-ordinator explained
"This is a win-win scenario: businesses improve their environmental performance and money stays within local communities, generating profit to be re-invested"

Blessed are the cheesemakers..... Theakston's brewery makes its own barrels in the traditional way at its site in Masham. Second in command brewer David Sopko contacted Why Waste about the suplus oak wood shavings. After some limited success finding an occasional use for them at project growing gourmet mushrooms (via Why Waste) Theakstons were still left with surplus. After some headscratching and a few phone calls Why Waste tracked down Iona Hill of the Ribblesdale Cheese Company. This tiny, 3 person cheese making company smoke their own cheese and occasionally cheese for other people too. Iona was delighted to be offered the shavings and loved the Why Waste ethos. She explained: "The oak shavings we receive from Theakstons are used as a bed for fine oak chippings that we use in our little smoker"
