Gardens, scholars say, are the first sign of commitment to a community. When people plant corn they are saying, let's stay here. And by the connection to the land, they are connected to one another. - Anne Raver

Dear Friends,
I'm the first to admit we're not perfect. Some weeks your bags are stunningly beautiful and bounteous and sometimes, not. Some of you have gardens of your own and know first hand the work and disappointment when an uninvited guest (s) move in over night and destroy your handiwork and hope. This year, we're having a particularly bad infestation of night moths of all sizes and species filling the air space and landing on our crops. In one green house, they moved in on our basil and Batavian lettuces and I collected handfuls of the critters (chickens loved them) and counted 5 different species! And then we just plain ole make human errors with special orders and likes and not likes..but we carry on and appreciate our loyal shareholders so much.
By now, you might have read and heard about the heat and drought conditions over much of the US and the pending increases in the price of food and related products. Most of which I don't consider 'food' but here's on article that might suprise you.
Common Foods with Corn
This is a good recipe for chard:
Swiss chard salad
The chard or rapini are also good in the bean soup medley we've sent this week. Add it towards the end of the cooking so as not to over cook.
We're hosting 2 events this Saturday..a Children's morning including pony rides and petting zoo plus earthworms and a seeded garden to take home. In the afternoon, Kayt will be sharing her knowledge of preserving foods through canning and will be demonstrating her marvelous summer relish. Hope you'll support us with these classes and all funds go directly to maintaining the farm. Hope to see you here.
