Dear Friends,

Summer soltice marks for most, the signal of vacation, beach time, and having extra day light at the end of the work day.  For us, it's a combination of glimses of panic (so much yet to do for the season) and relief knowing each passing day is a little shorter to fall season when, without the long days, we are able to stop the outdoor work sooner.  There's an old farm joke about the salesman trying to talk a farmer into buying  a tractor with the new modern invention of headlights.  The farmer just looked at him and said "so I can work all night too?"  Actually, I don't breathe a seaonal sigh of relief until fall Santa Ana winds and wild fire danger is over and there's a chance of rain in the air.

Speaking of water, we had a community meeting here at the farm Saturday with Sherri Lightner, our District 1 council person, a representative from the SD Water Authority, community activists and the Carmel Valley News.  We distributed 300+ invitations to surrounding neighbors and had about 30 attend.  The purpose was to hear about the impending new water rate increases, the history and state of affairs of our water sources and infrastructure and what the future holds for the cost of water.  It's not looking good folks.  By best estimation, we will be having at least a 9% increase in 2013 and another the next year.

I'm not easiy shocked anymore, but this artice stunned me: Where do eggs come from?

Here's another one:  Where have all the farms gone?
