'Upside-Down' Kingdom Living

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness'... That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:9a, 10

"For when I am weak, then I am strong." So, ignoring how you feel, how strong are you today? The mystery and paradoxical nature of Jesus' gospel is hard for us to grasp given our flesh and daily immersion in the world. Yet New Testament teaching assures us of the reality of the upside-down, counter-intuitive nature of God's Kingdom. A few examples:
  • The humble are exalted and the last shall be first (Lk 14:11, Mt 20:16, Mk 9:35)
  • We must die to self in order to fully live and become slaves in order to be truly free (Mt 10:39, 2Co 4:10, Ro 6:18, 1Co 7:22, Gal 2:20)
  • The poor are rich and we must give to receive (Ja 2:5, Acts 20:35)
  • Become a fool in the world's eyes to be wise (1Co 1:27-28, 3:18 & 4:10)

In fact, in teaching the Beatitudes (Mt 5:1-11) during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that true, right-side-up, living is full of such seeming paradoxes (e.g., rich paupers, comforted mourners, meek conquerors, militant pacifists, victoriously persecuted, etc.). Living this way, Jesus was accused by religious observers of being an insane, gluttonous, demon-possessed, anarchist! To the unregenerate, Jesus' life appears to be a failure...a fairly harmless, yet effective, teacher who died prematurely for seemingly foolish principles. To the saved, Jesus is the fullness of God and our Redeemer... not only our Savior and Lord, but also the example we hope to emulate of a life perfectly lived. Perhaps this is why George Barna recently labeled Biblebelieving evangelicals as "revolutionaries" in his book, Revolution (BarnaBooks, 2005). We learn to personally parti cipate in our Lord's work and mysteries by practi cing or living out these paradoxes. As leaders, our ability to embrace and communicate paradox is a clear mark of spiritual maturity and our greatest
testimony. With this in mind:

  • How would you define the term 'paradox'?

  • What examples of 'lived out' Kingdom paradoxes are evident in your life?
  • What can we do to 'practice the presence of God' to nurture a childlike faith that more fully embraces His mysteries and stands firm as His 'living paradoxes'?
Leveraging our Marketing Efforts to Build Community and Loyalty

According to Garner Research, business users spend an average of 49 minutes per day on email and check their messages six times per day! Given the inherent low cost of web-based communicati on, it's easier than ever to build a contact database and user community using broadcast email and targeted web landing pages. Unfortunately, industry statistics report that businesses typically have just two percent of the email addresses for their existing customers. If you find yourself in this situation, there are three things you can do to build a more robust database:
  1. Organize a calling/visitation campaign with the objective of coming away with email addresses for your key customer contacts.
  2. Build an 'opt-in' email list over time by capturing the email addresses of your customers, website visitors, and those who respond to advertising offers. Make the process very easy (i.e., email address only). Don't request lots of extraneous data and provide an incentive (e.g., discount code or free user e-newsletter).
  3. Hire an email marketing specialty firm or list seller to do a 'matching' project to generate an email list based on known company and individual names and addresses. This can lift your email coverage to 30+%.
Armed with a solid email database, begin to inexpensively generate targeted communications and offers to your customer base and prospects. Such segmentation of messages will allow customers to interact with you based on areas of specific interest. Over time, you can easily establish a greater understanding of their needs and interest (e.g., seasonal or life cycle off erings, special events and information).

Such increased communication can provide a sense of community and even result in 'viral' spreading of your company's message as they forward or discuss your communications with others. One company actually recruited a standing 'expert' panel which became a testing ground for new product ideas, sharpening existing offerings, and brainstorming next generation features and services relevant to the user community. Meeting quarterly, with the company furnishing only a facilitator, pizza and a conference room, this group provided great testimonials, helped enhance the company's core offerings, and became loyal long-term customers in the process. Email addresses in the hands of an expert 'Guerrilla Marketer' can be a beauti ful thing!

These core character-centered, lifeskills principles have been extensively researched and tested in multiple cultures and languages worldwide. Dr. Ron Jenson's research and application of the MAXIMIZERS principles for over 15 years in 50 countries discovered that the MAXIMIZERS are truly universal personal leadership principles that can be implemented and applied in today's diverse workplace environment.

As much as managers and supervisors need to be assessed and developed regarding their own personal character and behavior life skills, of equal importance, is that they are needed to help empower the valuable employees they manage to achieve maximum performance and productivity for the overall health and stability of the organization. Every human being has a DNA makeup that is comprised of certain Attitudes, Beliefs and Commitments that are vital to how they maximize their life opportunities.

Attitude describes a person's pattern of emotions and actions that indicates their mental state and disposition.

  • Make Things Happen - how to change habits and your personal discipline.
  • Achieve Personal Significance - how to build a strong self-image.
  • X-Out The Negatives - how to deal with fears, problems, and other difficulties.
Belief describes a person's mental framework where they have formed opinions, judgments and acceptance of what is true.

  • Internalize Right Principles - how to live a value-driven lifestyle at home and at work.
  • March To A Mission - how to build a sense of personal mission / purpose for your life.

Commitment describes the mental framework in which a person makes choices to act in a certain and consistent manner that is aligned with their attitudes and beliefs.

  • Integrate All Of Life - how to develop personal balance in attitudes, priorities and goals.
  • Zero In On Caring For People - how to listen, confront, empathize, and coach.
  • Energize Internally - how to live a character-based lifestyle.
  • Realign Rigorously - how to make mid-course corrections and handle constant change.
  • Stay The Course - how to stay focused and not quit on the important issues.
